If your phone has an IR blaster, download a TV-remote app like AnyMote Smart IR Remote. Not only can it control your TV, but also any device that receives an IR signal—set-top boxes, DVD and Blu-ray players, stereo equipment and even some air-conditioning systems.
How to Change the TV Channels Without a Remote
- Inspect the front and sides of your television to locate the buttons labeled "channel."
- Press the up button if you want to go to a higher numbered channel. It will be marked with a plus (+) sign or an arrow pointing up.

Press and hold the "Program" button on your remote. Note that this button may also be titled "Prog" or "Setup." Wait for a signal that your remote is ready to be programmed, such as a light glowing solidly or buttons flashing. (The specific signal can be found in your remote manual.)
Many remote controls have apps to ensure they work with your mobile device whether you have an Android, an iPhone or other smartphone. A universal remote can also work with smart devices and voice control systems such as Google Home or Amazon Alexa.
The short answer: Yes. You'll need to download an app and purchase a few pieces of equipment, but using your phone as a universal remote is no longer a tech dream. TVs, DVD players, cable boxes and stereos use an infrared (IR) signal to know when to do things like change the channel or play the DVD.
A Universal TV remote will work with any device model for almost all manufacturers and may be compatible with multiple devices. A remote control app is also a good option as they are available from most manufacturers and can be operated via a smartphone or tablet.
A remote control that will not respond or control your TV usually means low batteries. Make sure you are pointing the remote at the TV. There also may be something interfering with the signal such as other electronics, certain types of lighting, or something blocking the TV remote sensor.
TV remotes are usually quite resilient and will last for many years, but a heavily used one will eventually start to show signs of wear. The most obvious problem will be that certain buttons only work some of the time, or need to be pressed harder in order to work.
There are four conditions that can cause a remote to function improperly : Bad batteries. An electronic glitch in the remote. A defective remote.
Cost: The cost of any TV remote is a major consideration when looking at buying a new one. How much can you spend, and how much are you comfortable spending. They can start a $10 or equivalent and a little more, right through to $200 or $300 or more. Obviously the more you pay the more you get in general.
When you're scratching your head and wondering where you left your remote, just open up the app. The Tile remote finder works through Bluetooth, so it keeps going even if your Wi-Fi is down. Depending on the Tile tracker you select, you just need to be somewhere between 150 to 400 feet away from your missing remote.
