Products made from crude oilThese petroleum products include gasoline, distillates such as diesel fuel and heating oil, jet fuel, petrochemical feedstocks, waxes, lubricating oils, and asphalt.
Crude is classified by both physical and chemical characteristics. Crude oil is referred to as either light, medium, or heavy, based on its density. The American Petroleum Institute gravity, commonly shortened to API gravity, compares the density of crude to water.
Did you know that there are over 160 different types of crude oil traded on the market? West Texas Intermediate (WTI), Brent Crude, OPEC Reference Basket, Dubai Crude, Bonny Light and Urals are just six of many. Luckily, you don't have to learn the whole list.
Understanding the Different Types of Engine Oil
- Conventional Oil. Conventional oil is your standard motor oil.
- Full-Synthetic Oil. Synthetic motor oil is manufactured entirely in a factory, or lab.
- Synthetic Blend Oil.
- High-Mileage Oil.

There are almost 200 different varieties of oil available for sale today, but the three most common and most talked about are West Texas Intermediate (WTI), Brent Blend and OPEC Basket. WTI is one of the highest quality and, as a result, most expensive types of crude oil available.
Crude oil is a liquid fuel source located underground. It is extracted through drilling. Oil is used for transportation, heating and electricity generation, varied petroleum products, and plastics.
Oil Sands CrudeThe term oil sands refers to a particular type of nonconventional oil deposit that is found throughout the world. Oil sands, sometimes referred to as tar sands, is a mixture of sand, clay, other minerals, water, and bitumen. The bitumen is a form of crude oil that can be separated out from the mixture.
Brent blend is ideal for making Motor Spirit (Petrol) and middle distillates. Brent crude production is also on the decline, but it remains the major benchmark for other crude oils.
Producers of sweet crude oil include: Asia/Pacific: The Far East/Oceania: Australia.
Any oil with an API gravity below 22 is considered “heavy oil.” Less dense, or “light oil” has an API gravity of greater than 31. Light oil is preferable to heavy oil because a higher percentage of the hydrocarbons are converted into things like gasoline. That's why light oil trades at a premium to heavy oil.
When oil drilling is taking place, animals get displaced and ecosystems can be disturbed or killed off. As if that weren't enough, oil can also pollute our air. When oil is burned as part of the gasoline in cars, gases are released into the atmosphere and contribute to global warming.
It generally has a low wax content. Light crude oil receives a higher price than heavy crude oil on commodity markets because it produces a higher percentage of gasoline and diesel fuel when converted into products by an oil refinery.
Crude oil is a mixture of comparatively volatile liquid hydrocarbons (compounds composed mainly of hydrogen and carbon), though it also contains some nitrogen, sulfur, and oxygen. Those elements form a large variety of complex molecular structures, some of which cannot be readily identified.
Crude oil not only destroys the insulating properties of animal fur and bird feathers, which can lead to hypothermia, but it also impairs animals' abilities to fly and swim, sometimes causing oiled animals to drown. Spilled oil also can harm life because its chemical constituents are poisonous.
Although it is often called "black gold," crude oil has a range of viscosity and can vary in color from black to yellow depending on its hydrocarbon composition.
Crude oil means a mixture of hydrocarbons that exists in liquid phase in natural underground reservoirs and remains liquid at atmospheric pressure after passing through surface separating facilities.
Key Points. The Brent benchmark is used to price over three-quarters of the world's traded oil, as one of the most liquid crude grades. The waterborne crude oil on which ICE's Brent benchmark is based has access to global shipping, port and storage capacity. It is processed by refiners around the world.
Nigerian Bonny light crude oil (BLCO) is commonly used by the local population in folklore medicine for the management of various forms of gastrointestinal problems and male reproductive capacity.
In the United States, West Texas Intermediate is the preferred measure and pricing model. It is also slightly "sweeter" and "lighter" than Brent. West Texas Intermediate (WTI) is slightly lower in price than Brent. As of November 2, 2020, WTI was trading at $38.76 per barrel, while Brent traded at $41.19.
A benchmark crude or marker crude is a crude oil that serves as a reference price for buyers and sellers of crude oil. There are three primary benchmarks, West Texas Intermediate (WTI), Brent Blend, and Dubai Crude.
Murban is a light sweet crude oil produced by ADNOC to meet the growing global demand for quality and reliable oil supply. Murban crude was discovered at the Murban Bab Oil Field in 1958. The well, called Murban-3, began producing 3,674 barrels per day of crude oil upon its completion in 1960.
Crude oil is a mixture of hydrocarbons that exists as a liquid in underground geologic formations and remains a liquid when brought to the surface. Petroleum is a broad category that includes both crude oil and petroleum products. The terms oil and petroleum are sometimes used interchangeably.
WTI is the main oil benchmark for North America as it is sourced from the United States, primarily from the Permian Basin. The oil comes mainly from Texas. It then travels through pipelines where it is refined in the Midwest and the Gulf of Mexico.

Brent blend is a light crude oil (LCO), though not as light as West Texas Intermediate (WTI). It contains approximately 0.37% of sulphur, classifying it as sweet crude, yet not as sweet as WTI. Brent is suitable for production of petrol and middle distillates. It is typically refined in Northwest Europe.
Crude can also be thick and waxy, like this oil from Utah.Crude oil that has a high proportion of paraffin — a type of hydrocarbon — is thick and waxy, especially at low temperatures. This is an example of a heavier crude with a much higher relative density or higher specific gravity.
We produce five different grades of crude oil. These are: Arabian Heavy, Arabian Medium, Arabian Light, Arabian Extra Light, and Arabian Super Light.
