The needle gauge becomes a consideration when the vein of the patient is narrow, fragile, or superficial. In such cases, a gauge size with a LARGER number (eg, 25 G) may be preferred over a routine needle gauge (eg, 21 G) to minimize damage to the blood vessel, as well as minimize the associated pain with collection.
Needle gauge (G)The higher the gauge, the thinner the needle. For example, 32G is thinner than a 31G needle.
Not surprisingly, the narrower the needle (which, ironically, means it has a larger gauge number), the less it hurts. However, slimmer needles also are less effective in delivering a vaccine or withdrawing blood from your arm. They're also more likely to break off, which is something we always want to avoid.
Selecting needles by gauge size occurs by considering skin or hide thickness and the depth of the injection. The needle gauge is a series of numbers in which the lower the number, the wider the diameter of the needle. The higher the gauge number, the smaller the needle width.
Needle gauge table
| Needle gauge | Outer diameter (inches) | Inner diameter (inches) |
|---|
| 11 | 0.120 | 0.094 |
| 12 | 0.109 | 0.085 |
| 13 | 0.095 | 0.071 |
| 14 | 0.083 | 0.063 |
There are two main factors that make injections hurt: one is the thickness of the needle—the thicker the gauge of the needle, the bigger the hole, hence the bigger the pain; the other is the friction factor of the needle—even if a needle is fine, its saw-tooth design causes pain because it damages the skin. Japanese
All lancets are not the same. Lancets have different size needles. The smaller the needle, the less pain for the finger stick. It is important to know that the larger the number for the gauge of the needle, the smaller the size of the needle actually is.
Getting Rid of Used Needles, Syringes, and Lancets
- Use a sharps box if one is available.
- Remember never to re-cap your syringes before you dispose of them.
- If you do not have a regular sharps box, use a hard (puncture-proof) non-clear container for disposing used clipped or un-clipped syringes and lancets.
Are all lancets the same size? Lancets vary considerably in size, some are smaller and therefore more appropriate for children. These same lancets may not draw an appropriate amount of blood for adults.

Traditional lancets are what we commonly think of when we hear the term “Lancet”. Other common names are “pokers”, “needles”, or “lancers”. Quite simply, they are a molded piece of plastic with a round cap. Underneath the round cap is a needle.
Disposable lancets are used to pierce your skin and obtain a single drop of blood as a sample, which is then placed on a disposable test strip that you insert into a glucometer to calculate your blood sugar level.
The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) strongly recommends against reusing any lancet, particularly if it happens to involve more than one person. No kidding. Sharing needles is, of course, a whole different ballgame: Just don't do it.
A blood sugar level less than 140 mg/dL (7.8 mmol/L) is normal. A reading of more than 200 mg/dL (11.1 mmol/L) after two hours indicates diabetes. A reading between 140 and 199 mg/dL (7.8 mmol/L and 11.0 mmol/L) indicates prediabetes.
Each lancet starts out nice and sharp. But if you use the same one repeatedly for your diabetes blood sugar testing, as many people try to do, it can become dull. This doesn't bother everyone, but it could be contributing to your finger-pricking pain.
Recommended finger: the World Health Organisation recommends the middle or ring fingers are used for blood glucose tests (second and third fingers). You may want to avoid using your little finger due to the skin being thin.
Here's how to make it painless:
- Prick only warm fingers. If your hands are cold, shake them before pricking.
- Use a new lancet every time.
- Don't use alcohol sanitizer.
- Steer clear of the fingertip.
- Don't forget the thumb.
- No squeezing.
- Try tea tree oil on sore fingers to soothe and help heal.
(In general, guidelines advise against squeezing the finger too hard to get a blood drop because it may distort blood sugar readings.) Overall, the study found, clean hands are still key.
A traditional blood glucose meter is the most tried-and-true method of glucose monitoring for diabetes. However, in recent years, other technologies have come out to help make the process more painless by not using finger pricks. These noninvasive monitors are known as continuous glucose monitors (CGMs).
Tips for checking your blood sugar with less painOne option is to prick the side of your finger tip instead. This part of the finger might be less sensitive. You should also read the instructions on your device. Depending on the device, you might be able to prick your palm, arm, or thigh and get an accurate reading.
S. regulators have approved the first continuous blood sugar monitor for diabetics that doesn't need backup finger prick tests. Current models require users to test a drop of blood twice daily to calibrate, or adjust, the monitor.
Contamination of the fingers is a common culprit in blood sugar reading variability. That's because it only takes a little bit of food residue on your hands to impact blood glucose levels.
We both experience no pain. I know it stinks to buy yet another lancing system, but this is 100% worth it if you experience pain with your lancing. 5.0 out of 5 stars Easy and pain free on sensitive fingers! This lancing device is the most painless lancing device my husband and I have used.
Topic Overview. Some people with diabetes use their insulin syringes and lancets more than once to save money. But makers of syringes and lancets do not recommend using them more than once. Talk with your doctor before reusing these items.
