10 Still Illegal: Nissan Skyline GT-R R34 V-Spec IIFans of the Gran Turismo and Fast and Furious franchise will have to wait until 2024 to legally import the R34 Skyline to American soil, unless it's an import from MotoRex, as this model is still under the 25-year mark.
Long story short, the Nissan Skyline GT-R is illegal in the United States because it doesn't meet the requirements of the 1988 Imported Vehicle Safety Compliance Act. The Skyline was not built with the right safety features to comply with the relevant road safety legislation.
Under the new vehicle importation guidelines, all motor vehicles less than 25 years old must comply with FMVSS safety standards in order to be eligible for use in the United States. In other words, you can now technically import a Nissan Skyline R34 and make it road-legal in the USA.
That's an insane price tag on what is essentially a lightly-modified R34 that Paul didn't even own. But that auction happened when Paul was still alive and well, so when the car went back up on the auction block again after his death, the price tripled. That's right, this thing was listed for sale at $1.37 million!
Purchased from MotoRex, this car is one of only 11 true, Federally Legal R-34 GT-Rs in America. Owned by Craig personally, the car was modified soon after it was purchased. It was given a complete makeover and painted blue.
Sold by Barrett-Jackson at a Las Vegas auction that ran from June 17-19, the car, which went under the hammer with no reserve, sold for $555,000 (£398,000).
Paul Walker's final words were particularly haunting given the tragic way in which he died. The Fast and Furious star had been passenger in a red Porsche Carrera GT driven by his friend Roger Radas on November 30 2013. Radas lost control of the vehicle at 100pmh before it smashed into a tree and burst into flames.
The Nissan Skylines produced for the film were all R34s (the model itself was introduced back in 1998). The R34s in the films were powered by an RB26DETT 2.6-liter, DOHC, 24-valve straight six sitting longitudinally in the engine bay that's force fed by twin turbos and officially rated at 280 hp.
This one ended up at the GT-A restoration shop in Munich, Germany. Befitting a car from Fast & Furious, this Skyline has a long list of modifications, including a Turbonetics front-mounted intercooler, Nismo lowering springs and a custom roll cage.
In 1999 prices for the Nissan GT-R R34 in Japan started at 4,998,000 Yen (US $45,606), which in today's money is around $70,185. This is quite a bit less than the $113,540 starting price for the base model 2020 R35 GT-R.
Paul Walker's Toyota Supra in 'The Fast and the Furious' up for auction. paul walker was without a doubt a fan favorite Hollywood star.
In 1998, the NHTSA granted immunity for import vehicles over 25 years of age. That means you can now import any Nissan Skyline that was built in or before 1995, despite it failing to meet regulations. The only place you may run into trouble is in California.
