The Cons: Outsourcing is by far the most expensive way to stretch canvas prints. Your cost can range anywhere from $8-$20 per linear foot ($50-$150 per print), depending upon the size of the image and the thickness of the stretcher bar you choose.
You'll need an open-backed canvas frame to hold your artwork instead of a glass-covered frame. Look for styles that come with a groove and clips to hold your canvas in place. If you have a standard sized pre-stretched canvas, it should be easy to find a ready-made frame to fit.
Steps to Follow
- Measure and Outline. Measure the sides of your canvas with a measuring tape.
- Cut and Assemble. Using the measurements of your painted surface and margin area, begin to cut down your lumber pieces.
- Stretch. Now, you're ready to stretch.
- Staple and Frame.
Your oil paintings need to breathe to prevent the oil from sticking to the glass when you frame it, and it can take quite some time, even in the proper environment and conditions. The more air exposure, the better. You want to leave your oil paintings to dry in an open, well ventilated area with plenty of air flow.
As a black matte paint, chalkboard paint and a few sheets of paper can be a great way to frame artwork. You can paint a box on your wall and then use clear thumbtacks to gently pin your work on paper in front of it. The chalkboard paint conversely also works great as matting for images already in frames.
Put the floater frame face down on top of your canvas. Place one offset clip at the top center and bottom center of your canvas and frame. Screw in both offset clip into the canvas frame and turn the work around to check if it is still aligned center and re-position if it is not center.
The different types of wood can range from pine to fir. Whether they are made of wood, metal or both, stretcher strips serve the same purpose. They are used to form a rectangular or square support over which cotton or linen canvas is stretched.
Floating frames are designed to display paintings done or photos printed on stretched canvas. The frame has its own canvas backing, to which the canvas of the artwork is mounted.
The iconic art style of Bob Ross is most easily achieved by using oil paints, but not everyone can afford to spend $11 per color on Bob's licensed paints—especially when he uses over ten colors per painting. For half the cost, use acrylic paints instead.
After all, acrylics have been used only for about 70 years and paints based on acrylic dispersions for about 50 years, while oils have been around for 500 years.
This also means that it usually requires less paint to achieve a particular tint or shade when mixing paints, which is significant because good quality oil paints are generally more expensive than good acrylic paints.
Using water-based or acrylic paint when painting over oil-based paint is likely to cause peeling or chipping because those formulas don't bond well with the naturally glossy surface of oil-based paint.
