St Andrews, whilst one of the four ancient universities of Scotland, does not have the same international renown and it does not have such a wide research base. In general, Oxbridge is bigger, better funded, has wider strengths across more fields, is better known, and has produced more notable research.
St Andrews also had a significantly higher value added score than Cambridge. St Andrews received a score of 6.3/10 while Cambridge only got 5.4/10. The St Andrew entry tariff was second highest with 211, beaten only by Cambridge with 212 and and much higher than leaders Oxford who only has a score of 203.
It's extremely likely that if you are reading this and thinking of moving to St Andrews, it will be to study. Let's start by saying that St Andrews is extremely expensive, one of the most expensive places in the UK to live as a student (only outranked by London). But don't let that scare you!

Edinburgh will have a better and more prestigious international reputation. Here in the US Edinburgh is highly respected and well-known, whereas St. Andrews is not really known (except for in academia). Both are excellent universities, however.
St Andrews is known widely as the "home of golf". According to the earliest surviving document from 1552, the "playing at golf" on the links adjacent to the "water of eden" was granted permission by Archbishop Hamilton. The most famous golf course in the town is the Old Course, purchased by the town council in 1894.
