The Inuit people need seal hunting not only for the fur, but in order to properly survive in their harsh environment, while using nearly all of the seal and killing only when necessary. The Inuit people only kill about 1,000 harp seals annually and 10,000 adult ring seals for a total of 11,000 seals annually. Inuit also used nets to catch seal and in recent times, they used rifles rather than harpoons. When possible, Inuit hunted seal in open waters from kayaks, using a harpoon equipped with a sealskin float [68]. Central Inuit, including Copper, Netsilik and Iglulik, hunted year-round with techniques suited to the season.
The flavor of seal meat can be described as similar to lamb or beef, with a slightly gamey taste and texture that becomes more tender the longer it's cooked.
Hunted meats:
- Sea mammals such as walrus, seal, and whale. Whale meat generally comes from the narwhal, beluga whale and the bowhead whale.
- Land mammals such as caribou, polar bear, and muskox.
- Birds and their eggs.
- Saltwater and freshwater fish including sculpin, Arctic cod, Arctic char, capelin and lake trout.

The Canadian Marine Mammal Regulations that govern the hunt stipulate sealers may kill seals with wooden clubs, hakapiks (large ice-pick-like clubs) and guns. Because sealers shoot at seals from moving boats, the pups are often only wounded.
Why do hunters club seals? It's safe and easy, and it preserves the seal's valuable pelt. By law, you have to keep clubbing the seal in the forehead until you know for sure that it's dead. Sealers are supposed to “palpate” a pup's skull after they've clubbed it, to feel the caved-in bone beneath the skin and blubber.

Seal skins have been used by aboriginal people for millennia to make waterproof jackets and boots, and seal fur to make fur coats. Sailors used to have tobacco pouches made from sealskin. Canada, Greenland, Norway, Russia and Namibia all export sealskin. It was traditionally used to make Scottish sporrans.
Primarily in natural silver color with a characteristic black pattern, seal fur takes dye well and is available in a wide range of colors and patterns. Its soft, short and shiny guard hair are used in multiple application.
Seal oil is regularly added to stews and soups of wild fish and game. Seal oil is commonly used to store other subsistence products, such as partially-dried fish, "black meat" (dried meat of the bearded seal), and greens (such as the Inupiat sura, fresh shoots of the willow).
The seals are killed primarily for their pelts, for use in the fur and oil industries.
