The shop sells more dogs than you'd might expect, going through between 350 to 400 in an average week. But quantity-wise, they have nothing on the signature sandwich. On a busy Saturday, Pat's can sell upwards of 6,000 cheesesteaks, outnumbering hot dogs more than 100 to one.
Those craving a taste of Philadelphia can order cheesesteaks from Jim's or Campo's to be shipped anywhere in the United States. It'll cost you though -- a four-pack of cheesesteaks from Jim's is $99 from goldbely.com (but it's free shipping!). Philly.com sent one out to a homesick Philadelphian back in 2013.
Here's what to do: "A cheesesteak wit," is what you say if you want onions. "A cheesesteak witout," is what you say if you don't want onions. That said, no one will mind if you're a stickler for proper diction and you order your cheesesteak "with" or "without" and complete the sentence with "onions."
Heating Instructions
- Remove cheesesteaks from packaging and place the foil-wrapped sandwich in a 300F oven for 10-14 minutes or until hot.
- If package includes cheese whiz, warm the whiz pouch in warm water or place in a microwaveable-safe bowl and microwave for 10 seconds or until warm.
Combining your cheese choice with your onion preference, your order should sound something like this: “Could I please have a 'whiz with' (meaning cheese whiz with onions).” If you don't want onions, you can simply say, 'whiz without. ' Your other options are 'American with (without)' or 'Provolone with (without). '
Pat's King of SteaksSince then, Pat's has grown from a little stand at the southern end of South Philly's Italian Market to one of the most famous cheesesteak shops in the world, albeit still in the same — and only — location. A 24-hour shop, Pat's shuts down for only 48 hours each year: Thanksgiving and Christmas.
pat's and Geno's are both very good cheesesteaks. My personal favorite is Pat's. I choose Pat's mainly because their cheesesteak is more gooey and cheesy than geno's. Their steak is bigger than Pat's and Geno's and is just as good or better.
A cheesesteak (also known as a Philadelphia cheesesteak, Philly cheesesteak, cheesesteak sandwich, cheese steak, or steak and cheese) is a sandwich made from thinly sliced pieces of beefsteak and melted cheese in a long hoagie roll.
Philly Cheesesteak is a sandwich made with super thinly sliced ribeye steak, caramelized onion, and provolone cheese. The Philly Cheesesteak has been modified on the West Coast to include bell peppers and mushrooms but a true “Philly” only has steak, onion and cheese served over a roll.
As Whiz became popular at Pat's, American and provolone went out of favor, and weren't reintroduced there until the mid 1970s, Olivieri Jr. said. Today, Whiz is "overwhelmingly the favorite" at Pat's, outselling runnerup American by 8 or 10 to 1, he said.
When did Pat's King of Steaks open?
According to Philadelphia's official tourism site, Pat Olivieri invented the cheesesteak in the 1930s. Olivieri was a hot dog vendor in south Philadelphia who, as the story goes, decided to grill some beef from the butcher and put it on an Italian roll. A cab driver caught a whiff and asked for a steak sandwich.
