Down is the natural insulator used in Canada Goose jackets. You'll be happy to know that each coat has a water-repellent finish to help protect the down and keep you dry. However, a typical Canada Goose parka is not fully waterproof. Canada Goose parkas were first engineered for the extreme cold.
How to Waterproof a Jacket
- 1) Clean Jacket: Dirt and oils attract water on the surface of your jacket, which overtime break-down any existing DWR treatment and makes your jacket "wet-out".
- 2) Apply Water Repellent:
- 3) Air Dry or Tumble Dry: First, check your care tag for the manufacturer's recommended temperature setting.
The
North Face line of
backpacks does not have any distinct

Some makers with waterproof backpacks:

Wash in warm water with a mild powder detergent (without bleach) on a gentle cycle. You may wish to repeat the rinse cycle to be sure all soap residue is removed. An extra spin cycle will help to remove excess water. Do not lift the product from the washer; scoop it from the bottom.
Whilst down material loses its insulating properties when it gets wet, the shell of many down jackets will be coated with Durable Water Repellent coatings (DWR) to offer some resistance to rain. You can also get fully waterproof down jackets that combine this coating with a waterproof membrane.
100% Polyester Hydrenalite™ – The fabric is treated with a water resistant layer, that while not waterproof by any means will keep you dry in light rain.
However, polyester is considered water-resistant. Polyester is also considered “everyday waterproof,” which means although it's not 100% waterproof, it is protective enough for most everyday situations, such as being out in rain or snow, but not completely submerged under water for a prolonged period of time.
How do you wash a ThermoBall Jacket? Wash in warm water with a mild powder detergent or Nixwax. An extra spin cycle will also remove excess water. Line dry, or tumble dry on very low, or no heat.
The North Face ThermoBall Insulated Full-Zip Jacket - Men's. For lightweight, cold-weather comfort, layer on The North Face ThermoBall™ full-zip jacket. It's as toasty and compressible as down, yet retains warmth even when wet for all-season insulation.
The North Face Gotham Parka II comes with the warmest ratings. This midweight jacket is water repellent and wind resistant. The nylon and polyester shell are stuffed with 550-fill of goose down and 160 grams of Heatseeker. The goose down has been sourced within RDS.
The ThermoBall Full Zip Jacket is a great insulating layer for any cold weather activity, especially when water or sweat might come into play. It is light, warm and performs remarkably when wet.
The Thermoball Difference
Most synthetic insulation comes in the form of a flat roll like the insulation you put into your house's walls and roof. Primaloft Thermoball is different because it resembles loose goose down clusters making it more compressible and warmer than other forms of synthetic insulation.Ounce for ounce, down is warmer than nearly all synthetic insulations. Very few manmade fibers can match down's warmth-to-weight ratio.

The North Face market the Thermoball as a hiking jacket and that makes sense. I'd say it's best suited to temperatures between -5°C to 15°C, then you can switch between using it as a mid or outer layer.
Gore-Tex, being a fully waterproof membrane that withstands time has a water column of over 28.000mm, which means that is suitable for the harshest of rains and snow blizzards. On the other hand, DryVent's rating is around 15.000mm, which also means that this is a fully waterproof membrane, just like Gore-Tex.
But these same pores are large enough for moisture vapor to pass through, so your body's perspiration is able to escape and you don't get clammy and uncomfortable. 03. How durable is GORE-TEX® fabric? GORE-TEX® fabric will last for many years.
It's incredibly durable, and unlike other "waterproof/breathable" fabrics that can lose waterproofness after repeated laundering, flexing, abrasion, exposure to body oils or insect spray, the waterproofness and breathability of GORE-TEX® fabric is guaranteed under any conditions you may encounter.
20,000 Waterproof Rating: A waterproof rating of 20K will keep you dry in the most extreme rain and snow events. 20K waterproof gear will protect you the best in all conditions.
There is always a difference of opinion when it comes to washing GORE-TEX®; just like washing down jackets. Regardless of opinion, routine care of your GORE-TEX® jacket or pants is the key to keeping your gear performing at its best. We recommend care every 10-12 days of heavy activity.
Regular wear and tear and excess dirt can all impact your GORE-TEX jacket's performance. Fear not! When this happens, you'll definitely want to think about re-waterproofing your GORE-TEX, to help keep it in great condition. Apply the GORE-TEX waterproof treatment and then put the jacket in the dryer for 20 minutes.
The best thing about the PUL fabric is that you can wash it any number of times without damage.

Softshell: most softshell materials, such as the original GORE-WINDSTOPPER, are as breathable as good GORE-TEX materials. However, the disadvantage here is that the seams generally have a “wicking” effect which allows moisture to pass through.
