Estella married Drummle because she knew he was a terrible person and everyone would be perplexed and hurt that she married him. She was more interested in hurting her suitors, because there were plenty of excellent men that wanted her. Pip hates Drummle, because he knows that Drummle is an idiot and a brute.
Before the marriage, he got her to agree to buy the brewery Arthur inherited from their father. When the day of the marriage came, Compeyson left her a letter saying that he would not be present. This scarred Miss Havisham for life; she stopped her life at the moment she received that note.
In Great Expectations, Bentley Drummle dies in an accident involving a horse that he mistreated. In the book, Drummle marries Estella but is an abusive husband.
Pip declares his undying love for Estella and she responds with a strange, detached form of sympathy. She has a heart of ice, but she's not deliberately evil. Estella is a victim of her unusual and loveless upbringing, but hope appears in her self-awareness.
Biddy's schoolhouse is empty, as is Joe's smithy. When Pip finds them, he is shocked to discover that they have been married. Despite his disappointed expectation of marriage to Biddy, he expresses happiness for them and decides to take the job with Herbert.
Drummle is a cruel person to those around him because he feels superior. Pip is hearing about what had happened to Estella and how unhappy she was with Drummle. Pip and Drummle never do get along and Pip is even more mad at Drummle because he is going for Estella when he loves her.
Character Analysis EstellaBoth are used by their surrogate parents — Estella by Miss Havisham and Pip by Magwitch — to extract revenge from society. Both share a somewhat passive approach to life that she alludes to when she says they are both unable to follow their own free path but must do the bidding of another.
However, in both endings Pip and Estella do not get together. In the revised ending, we are told that Pip has “no shadow of another parting from her” but this is not an indication that they get together. Pip tells Estella that he still lives abroad. He never married.
Estella enters into a disastrous and abusive marriage with Bentley Drummle. When he is killed she becomes a widow, free to associate with Pip once more. Estella is spoiled and Miss Havisham lavishes her with possessions – particularly jewellery. She uses this to literally attract men to her.
His sister, whom Pip calls Mrs. Joe, thunders about. She threatens Pip and Joe with her cane, which she has named Tickler, and with a foul-tasting concoction called tar-water.
Magwitch also acts as one of the father figures to Pip (along with Joe Gargery and Mr Jaggers). Although he terrifies Pip when he is a boy, Magwitch grows to love Pip as his own son and tries to help him to become a gentleman later in life. Pip also comes to love and respect the older Magwitch.
