While not required by law, many employers give an employee the option of taking off another day if a holiday falls on the employee's day off. Similarly, many employers observe a holiday on the preceding Friday or the following Monday if a holiday falls on a Saturday or Sunday and the employer is closed on weekends.

While many private employers offer some or all federal holidays off as an employee benefit, there is no law requiring them to do so.

President Franklin Delano Roosevelt designated Columbus Day (then celebrated October 12) a national holiday in 1934. Since 1971, when Columbus Day was designated the second Monday in October, it has been celebrated as a federal holiday.
The states of Florida, Hawaii, Alaska, Vermont, South Dakota, New Mexico, Maine, Wisconsin, and parts of California including, for example, Los Angeles County do not recognize it and have each replaced it with celebrations of Indigenous People's Day (in Hawaii, "Discoverers' Day", in South Dakota, "Native American Day"
To set the record straight, the third Monday in February is a federal holiday, meaning that federal employees get the day off and federal offices are closed. Officially, the holiday is called Washington's Birthday, to honor the first American president, George Washington.
Columbus Day is a federal holiday celebrated on the second Monday in October. It is, however, not a public legal holiday in some states such as Washington, California, Oregon, Nevada and Hawaii. The day commemorates October 12, 1492, when Italian navigator Christopher Columbus landed in the New World.

Next year, Christmas Day and St. Stephen's Day fall on a Friday and Saturday, meaning the latter may fall for banks the following Monday (December 28).

Holiday Overtime and State LawThese employees must receive overtime pay for time worked on Columbus Day or Veterans Day at one and one-half times their regular pay rate. The overtime must be voluntary and an employer may not fire or discipline an employee because she refused to work overtime on any of those days.
The CDE encourages you to recognize October 11, 2021 as Columbus Day (36 United States Code 107). Columbus Day is celebrated annually on the second Monday of October and is not recognized as a school holiday in California.

The state of Colorado was finally able to abolish Columbus Day in 2020 by replacing it with a new holiday on the first Monday in October that celebrates Frances Xavier Cabrini, an Italian American woman and patron saint of immigrants. Our state now joins 12 other states and Washington D.C. in eliminating the holiday.

Are Chase banks open on Columbus Day? No, All branch of Chase Bank will be closed on Columbus Day.
Though Columbus Day is one of the 10 US legal federal holidays, it is not considered a major one. There will be no postal service and while some banks may close, most businesses remain open. Retail stores may run special sales.
Banks will be open on Good Friday, but some may have modified hours due to the coronavirus outbreak. Call your local branch before you visit.
