India said on Wednesday it plans to spend nearly $6 billion to revive loss-making state-funded telecom operators Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd (BSNL) and Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Ltd (MTNL). MTNL, which is a listed company, will become a subsidiary of BSNL until the merger is completed, Prasad told journalists.
Distressed telecom PSUs Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Ltd (MTNL) and BSNL have been incurring losses and have been facing problems in clearing staff salaries in the recent past. The two PSUs had delayed payment of salaries for February until mid-March due to a financial crisis.
As on day ( May 2019) LS elections yet to complete. Future of BSNL and its employees depends upon what decision the new govt will take. Either it may leave as it is to die naturally or some revival plans like reducing retirement age to 58 years and VRS package, which will reduce its staff in turn salary expenditure.
NEW DELHI: The government on Thursday assured Rajya Sabha that public sector telecom companies BSNL and MTNL will not be shut down and efforts are being made to revive them soon.
It is improving. BSNL is trying to match and keep ahead of its competition, within its constraints of government stipulations for cutting capital expenditure. In the past, BSNL has responded well to competition… until there is a significant new change in the market.
“Low tariffs due to fierce competition in the mobile segment, high staff cost and absence of 4G services (except in few places) in the data-centric telecom market are the main reasons for losses of BSNL,” Prasad said.
According to a report from Telecom Talk, BSNL is deploying its 4G service to 8,500 sites across the 20 circles in the country. And the way BSNL is doing is rather clever. The operator will selectively discontinue its 3G service and install the 4G infrastructure in its place to kick-start the faster network.
