Wachapreague: This Seaside town in Accomack is named for one of the Machipongo villages that was located at or near present-day Wachapreague. The name roughly translates as little city by the sea.
Onancock: This bayside town in Accomack County is named for an Algonquin word that means foggy place. It was originally occupied by Native Americans until 1670. Onancock, like many other names on the Shore, comes from Algonquin.
The state of Virginia was named after England's Queen Elizabeth I. In the early 1600's, all of North America that was not Spanish or French was then called "Virginia" in honor of "The Virgin Queen," and the earliest English colonial expeditions were sent by the Virginia Company of London.
The 70-mile-long (110 km) region is part of the Delmarva Peninsula and is separated from the rest of Virginia by the Chesapeake Bay. Its population was 45,553 as of 2010.
The island's name derives from those early visitors: by one popular tale, chincoteague meant "Beautiful land across the water" in their language. Use of Chincoteague Island by European settlers began in the 17th century, when the island was granted to a Virginia colonist.
Chincoteague took its name from the tnbe, Cing~Teague, which means "Beautiful Land. Across the Water." The name means 'other side of the water place' or 'the other side place. ' Another name, Pungoteague, came from the Indian word.

The Coastal Virginia – Eastern Shore region is accessible via the 17.5-mile Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel. The Shore stretches 70 miles and is situated between the Chesapeake Bay and Atlantic Ocean. The Shore is known for its fresh oysters and winter is the season to claim these succulents for your own.
There are fifteen states which have coastal access to the Atlantic Ocean. These states are: Maine, New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Connecticut, New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Delaware, Maryland, Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, and Florida.

The Eastern Shore is a peninsula bordered by the Chesapeake Bay to the west and the Atlantic Ocean to the east.To help understand this setting that has been critical to life in Virginia for thousands of years, geographers have identified five physical regions in the state: the Coastal Plain (Tidewater), Piedmont, Blue Ridge Mountains, Valley and Ridge, and Appalachian Plateau.
There's no particular geographical reason for Delaware and Maryland to be one state. Historically it's actually closer to Pennsylvania than to Maryland. If Delaware had been given to Cecil Calvert instead of William Penn, it would likely just be called “Maryland”, with three additional counties.
As for Coastal Virginia, it is a strip of sand running up Virginia's Atlantic coast and around the fringes of the Chesapeake Bay.
While all of Maryland was once part of Virginia, the Virginians fought physically (with guns, resulting in deaths) to assert control over only two parts: Kent Island and the Chesapeake Bay. He named the island after his home county in England, after exploring the upper Chesapeake Bay in 1627.

The Chesapeake Bay is an estuary: a body of water where fresh and salt water mix. The Bay and its tidal tributaries have 11,684 miles of shoreline—more than the entire U.S. west coast.
