Eliud Kipchoge running the London Marathon. Since finding distance running in his late 30s, he has graduated towards a primarily plant-based diet, cutting out lots of processed foods and lowering his meat and dairy intake; though he is not fully plant-based.
Like most of Kenya's elite athletes, Kipchoge is a Kalenjin — an umbrella term used to describe a group of nine closely related tribes, including the Nandi, that inhabit the high-altitude Rift Valley region.

As far as we know, Kipchoge trains long and hard, probably around 120 miles per week.
If we consider that we burn an average of 100 calories per mile whilst running, over the distance of a marathon (26.2 miles) that is an average of over 2600 calories – that's more than the recommended daily calorie intake for adults (both men and women), so you can treat yourself post-race without feeling guilty!
The official world records in the 5000 metres are held by Joshua Cheptegei with 12:35.36 for men and Letesenbet Gidey with 14:06.62 for women. The first world record in the men's 5000 m was recognized by World Athletics (formerly called the International Association of Athletics Federations, or IAAF) in 1912.
The Olympics are a chance to honor the strongest and fastest athletes in the world, but we rarely hear about the weakest or the slowest. Shizo Kanakuri is the exception. He holds the world record for the slowest time in the Olympic marathon.
How old is kipchoge?

Usain Bolt's 100m recordsAt the record-winning event, Usain Bolt's average ground speed was 37.58km/h, whilst reaching a top speed of 44.72km/h in the 60-80m stretch – numbers fitting for the world's fastest man. Jamaican sprinter Usain Bolt is regarded as the fastest man on the planet.
Kipchoge finished in 01:59:40.2, that means he ran 4:34 minutes per mile – or 2:50 minutes per km.
The current world record for one mile is 3:43.13, set by Hicham El Guerrouj of Morocco in 1999.

How fast can a human run?
I set it at 12 miles per hour—a five-minute-mile pace—and tried to hang on for a minute and 14 seconds.
With plateaus reaching an average height of 1,500 meters — or 4,921 feet — above sea level, Kenyans get to experience “high-altitude training†daily, and such an environment lends itself well to running. Ethiopia's high central plateau ranges from 4,200 to 9,800 feet. At higher altitudes, air is thin and oxygen scarce.
Several factors have been proposed to explain the extraordinary success of the Kenyan and Ethiopian distance runners, including (1) genetic predisposition, (2) development of a high maximal oxygen uptake as a result of extensive walking and running at an early age, (3) relatively high hemoglobin and hematocrit, (4)
A pacer helps you to finish a race in a specific time. Half-marathons and marathons often provide pacing teams for a variety of finish times. Pacing teams are led by experienced racers who are trained to help you maintain a steady pace.
Kenyan runner Eliud Kipchoge finished a marathon in under 2 hours, sprinting at a 4:34-mile pace. Here's why his record doesn't count. His time was 1 hour, 59 minutes, 40 seconds. While that makes Kipchoge the first person to run 26.2 miles in under 2 hours, the feat won't count as a world record.
Kipchoge's time is not an official word record, because he did not run under two hours in race conditions. The event, sponsored by British petrochemicals company INEOS, was optimized for speed: Kipchoge ran in ideal weather on a flat course in Vienna, which was largely protected from wind by large trees.
Test yourself against Eliud Kipchoge's record. Tokyo and Rio men's champion is the only man to have run under two hours. His world record pace was less than 3 minutes per kilometer. The Olympic record time of 2 hours and 6 minutes means running 5km in 14 minutes 50 second EIGHT times in a row.
