While a growing number of colleges have announced “test-optional†criteria, NIU is the first public institution in Illinois to adopt an entirely “test-blind†criteria for applicants.
NIU's residence halls house over 3,500 NIU students each year. Living on campus provides many opportunities to meet people from different cultures, countries and ethnic backgrounds. All traditionally admitted students must attend a one-day orientation program. During orientation, incoming Huskies will learn about resources and strategies to help them succeed at NIU. They will also meet with academic advisors, register for classes and begin to prepare for their first semester.
To participate in the Guaranteed Admission Program, you must: Be a high school graduate. Be in good standing at your community college. Have a cumulative GPA of 2.00 (out of 4.00) at all colleges/universities attended.
Your statement of purpose, or personal statement, should be approximately 250 to 750 words in length. It should outline your preparation for graduate study in your chosen field, as well as your goals for graduate school and beyond.
Northern Illinois University hasn't reported their stance on SAT Essay/ACT Writing, but most likely they consider it to be optional. Thus you don't need to worry too much about Writing for this school, but other schools you're applying to may require it.
CHANCE is an alternative admissions program for new freshmen that provide access to college for urban students from Chicago, Rockford, Aurora and other Illinois cities. Students entering through the CHANCE program are recruited from targeted high schools.
