Virginia's statewide average was $3.27 per gallon. South of the border, prices were averaging $3.40. North Carolina's cheapest gas was about $3.15.
This resulted in drastically cheaper gas on an inflation-adjusted basis with the lowest recorded inflation-adjusted price for gas occurring in 1998 at $1.61 per gallon.
In New Jersey, it's illegal to pump your own gas – something Illinoisans have been doing since the early '70s.
The last time the national average fell below $1 was in 1999, according to data from OPIS, which tracks gas prices for AAA, ans the low for this century was $1.09 reached in December 2001.

To estimate the fuel cost for a trip you must know the trip distance, the average per litre cost of fuel and the vehicle's fuel consumption.
- Divide the trip distance by 100.
- Multiply the result of this by the fuel consumption.

Costco can sell gas at between 6 cents and 12 cents below the market price, according to research firm Trefis. It discounts gas in the hopes that people will fill up and then head over to its stores. Gas is already a low-margin product, and climbing prices can turn gasoline into a money loser for the company.
As a general rule, most cars have about 2.5 gallons left in the tank when the gas light comes on. So depending on how many miles you get per gallon, you can probably go anywhere between 30-60 miles.
