The All India Football Federation gave various reasons for the team's withdrawal, including travel costs, lack of practice time, and valuing the Olympics above the World Cup.

From 2009 to 2019 Pakistan was unable to host international matches in Pakistan after the terror attack on the touring Sri Lanka cricket team. This decade led to little or no international cricket taking place in Pakistan and Pakistan played its home series in the UAE (specifically Dubai and Abu Dhabi).

This time, India's victory was nearly total: India accepted cease-fire only after it had occupied 740 square miles [1,900 km2], though Pakistan had made marginal gains of 210 square miles [540 km2] of territory. Despite the obvious strength of the Indian wins, both countries claim to have been victorious.
Pakistani cricketers were allowed to play in the IPL but ever since the 2008 Mumbai Terror attack, the political relations between the two countries turned sour. After the attack of 26/11, all the bilateral ties between BCCI and PCB were dissolved and Pakistani players were banned from IPL.
