A single roll of wallpaper that is 20.5” w x 16.5' contains approximately 28 square feet of wallpaper. The amount of coverage will vary based on your pattern repeat.
So if the size of your wall is 12'-10'ft it will take around 3 rolls. First, there is no such thing as “standard size”, or one size fits all. Even 12′ x 12′ rooms may have some differences depending on windows and doors, fireplaces, etc. Usually wallpaper comes in double rolls, this saves on waste.
Deciding how much wallpaper you require is actually quite simple to calculate if you follow these steps:
- Measure the width and height of each wall.
- Multiply the height and width together to get the total square footage.
- Add the square footage of each wall to get your total area.
It's generally cheaper to paint a room than it is to wallpaper it, but wallpaper tends to have a longer life-span so the costs even out over time. Similar to paint, cheap wallpaper is a diseconomy.
Wallpaper is printed in three standard widths, 21 inches, 27 inches and 42 inches. These are the standard industry sizes of wallpapers. One single roll of wallpaper yields approximately 50 square feet of usable paper, regardless of its width.

Wallpaper is priced as single rolls and packaged by the manufacturer and delivered as double rolls. This means that if you order four single rolls of wallpaper, what will actually be delivered to your home or office will be two double rolls of wallpaper - each roll will be equivalent to two single rolls of wallpaper.
Unscrew the socket and pull away from the wall a centimetre. Paste the wall as previously (which is why you need to turn the electrics off – water + electricity not good!) and smooth the wallpaper into place. When the wallpaper meets the socket try to hang the paper over it. The socket will protrude under the paper.
Drop match wallpaper has a design that matches up across strips both vertically and horizontally. There are multiple types of drop matches (most are half-drop or a quarter drop). This simply means that the pattern will match up with a different spot in the design for the next strip.
Trim rolls are about 15 linear feet long. Enter the cost of the wallpaper per roll (about 27 square feet) and the room dimensions.

Wallpapers can be manufactured in different widths -- primarily due to different equipment in different factories. Metric, also called Euro, single rolls have between 27 ½ and 29 square feet. Double rolls have 56 to 58 square feet.
Convert Square Feet to Linear Yards: Divide total square footage by 13.5 = number of yards in 54” wide goods. (Divide by 12 to include waste or 9 for patterns with large repeats.) Convert Square Yards to Linear Yards: Multiple square yard quantity by 9, then divide the result by 13.5.
Sloping walls
Each standard American roll gives you about 35 square feet. Allowing for trimming and waste, the usable amount in each roll generally comes to 27 square feet.
