There is also much more variation in prize funds between tournaments on the European Tour than on the PGA Tour.
Strictly speaking, anyone who earns money by playing or teaching golf can be considered a golf pro. A pro golfer is someone who plays golf for a living. The best pro golfers play on a major tour, such as the PGA Tour in the United States, or the European Tour. Other pro golfers play on development or mini-tours.
A scratch golfer is someone who has around a zero handicap. This means that the player will usually shoot right around par on any given course.
In golf, it's a player who is annually ranked below the top fifty players in the world, but who is good enough to keep his tour card. Journeyman players are necessary for professional sports. These are the folks who the stars rise above.
The Advocates Professional Golf Association was established in 2008 as a non-profit organization with the mission to bring greater diversity to the game of golf.

In professional golf, the term qualifying school is used for the annual qualifying tournaments for leading golf tours such as the U.S.-based PGA and LPGA Tours and the European Tour. They join the leaders on the previous year's money list/order of merit and certain other exempt players as members of the tour.
The Minor League Golf Tour is a lower cost alternative. A very small group of top players outside of these status based tours earn enough money playing golf to sustain their dreams on "developmental-mini tours". While it is good for them, it takes hundreds of players to support them.
