The difference is basically an application. You take the FE exam, and then you have to tell your State Licensing Board, “Hey, I passed and graduated! Give me a metaphorical gold badge!” The FE is the exam and the EIT is the badge/title, although colloquially they're used interchangeably.

Pass the 6-Hour Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) Examination to receive an Engineer Intern (EI) enrollment or Engineer-in-Training (EIT) certification. The FE exam is not a degree requirement to graduate or an entrance exam for further education (i.e. it is not similar to the MCAT, LSAT, GRE, GMAT, etc). The FE exam is appropriate to take for students who are close to finishing an undergraduate engineering degree.
The FE exam is a computer-based test (CBT). It is closed book with an electronic reference. Examinees have 6 hours to complete the exam, which contains 110 multiple-choice questions. The 6-hour time also includes a tutorial, a break, and a brief survey at the conclusion.

Once you've agreed that a PE license is something you want to attain, you'll want to get an entry-level engineering job. Because you're an EIT, you'll be required to work under the supervision of a registered professional engineer. How Much Does The Exam Cost? The fee for the exam has been $225 for some time now. Yet, the NCEES has reduced the 2018 rates to $175. Sometimes your state's board will have an additional free for the EIT process so be sure to check specifics.
In itself, the FE/EIT is not worth a whole lot. However, I tell all of the engineers I mentor to take it as soon as they are eligible. The key here is that the PE license is tremendously valuable in many areas of engineering. You never know where you will end up so it is best to take the FE/EIT so you are prepared.
You can take the FE exam at any time during or after your senior year. However, since the FE exam covers material that is fresh in your mind while you are still a student, it is recommended that you take the FE exam during your senior year, or shortly thereafter.
