STRAITS OF MACKINAC — A 59-year-old Petoskey man survived after jumping from the Mackinac Bridge and falling into the near-freezing waters of the straits. Water temperatures in the area hover around 40 degrees, according to the Coast Guard.
Two vehicles have fallen off the bridge: On September 22, 1989, Leslie Ann Pluhar died when her 1987 Yugo plunged over the 36-inch-high (91 cm) railing.
Mackinac Bridge divides the Upper and Lower peninsulas of Michigan. It was built in 1957, is 26,372 feet long and ascends to a height of 200 feet above water. Some drivers get so nervous about crossing the bridge that they don't even go.
The Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco is 200 feet taller than the Mackinac Bridge. It is also 20 feet higher from the water than the Michigan Big Mac. However, the Mackinac is far longer than the Golden Gate bridge, which is only about 1.7 miles long compared to the Mackinac's total length of five miles.

The world's longest single span is the 1.2-mile main suspension section that's part of a three-span bridge crossing the Akashi Strait in Japan. The Akashi-Kaikyo Bridge, which opened in 1998, requires 190,000 miles of wire cabling—enough to circle the globe seven times.
You can take a boat to Mackinac Island. And at certain times of the year, you may even be able to snowmobile to Mackinac Island. But you can never drive a car to Mackinac Island. With no cars allowed on Mackinac Island, horse-drawn carriage rides are a popular way of getting around.
By total length the Mackinac Bridge, at 5 miles long, remains one of the longest bridges of its kind.
Why? It is because of the area's rich history with the Native Americans, French, and British. The area was named Michilimackinac by the Native Americans and when the French built a fort here in 1715, they recorded the name with a "c" on the end as a French word with an "aw" sound would be pronounced.

The main strait is 31â„2 miles (5.6 kilometers) wide and has a maximum depth of 295 feet (90 meters; 49 fathoms), and connects two of the Great Lakes, Lake Michigan and Lake Huron.
