How to Raise Chlorine/Bromine Levels in a Hot Tub

- Look for visible signs of algae.
- Avoid the use of fertilizers near the spa if outdoors and uncovered.
- Consider draining and refilling the spa.
Use bromine tablets to maintain the bromine level in the water. Once the bromine levels are stabilized, add bromine tablets into a floater and place it in your spa. The tablets will slowly dissolve and release bromine into the water to replace the chemical that is lost over time and keep a healthy balance in the water.
You can still use a chlorine shock even if you use a bromine sanitiser, however, you should never mix chemicals dry. Add the chlorine shock after a water change or heavy use and wait for the chlorine level to reduce before adding your bromine.
It's not necessary to shock the spa every time you use it and maybe not even weekly. For a bromine spa, using an oxidizer weekly helps maintain the bromine level in your spa water. Activating bromide ions with spa shock converts them to hypobromous acid, the killing form of bromine.
