I've been told that RTV and many other silicone caulking have a finite shelf life (i.e. 2 yrs after manufacturing) before they start to decompose (breaking down) even when left unused. For me (permatex) I tend to use it and then cap it snug.. if it becomes harden, I'll toss it away and buy/start with a fresh new tube.

We do not recommend using expired materials because the catalyst inside becomes ineffective. This causes curing times, the time it takes the liquid sealant to become a solid, to increase dramatically. The resulting silicone rubber seal is also of poor quality.

How do you clean expired silicone?

  1. Remove the caulk using a putty knife or other flat-edged scraper. Scrape out as much caulk as possible, but don't take so long that the caulk begins to dry.
  2. Scrub the caulk residue away using paper towels or disposable cloth rags.
  3. Wipe the area down with clean water to remove any residual soap or solvent.
