TOKYO, Japan — Seattle Mariners outfielder Ichiro Suzuki announced tonight that he has decided to retire from his active playing career, effective immediately. He made the announcement following game #2 of the Major League Baseball Japan Opening Series in Tokyo.
Over the span of Ichiro's 27-year professional baseball career, Guerrero signed with the Expos as an 18-year-old (March 1, 1993), made his Major League debut (Sept. 19, 1996), hit his 400th career home run (Aug. 10, 2009), played his final Major League game (Sept.
In his nine NPB seasons in Japan, Ichiro had 1,278 hits, a . 353 career batting average, and won seven Golden Glove Awards. Ichiro's time in the Japanese baseball leagues matured him as a player and a person, and he often credits it for his current success.
