Kipchoge's time is not an official word record, because he did not run under two hours in race conditions. (He already holds the official record, having run the 2018 Berlin Marathon in 2 hours, 1 minute and 39 seconds.) These pace setters took turns running in a V formation in front of Kipchoge to reduce drag.
Kipchoge ran the 42.195KM distance in a remarkable time of 1:59:40:2.
A sub 2-hour marathon would mean a runner would have to run sub-60 seconds for each half. Having a reserve for an elite marathon is being able to go 4-5 seconds per kilometer faster, and so it really is on the limit.
"It is a great feeling to make history in sport after Sir Roger Bannister [set the first sub-four-minute mile] in 1954," said Kipchoge, who broke the world record in the event at the BMW Berlin Marathon last year, clocking 2:01:39.
The average pace was 21.2 kilometers per hour, or 13.1 miles per hour (essentially, one half marathon per hour!).
What is the fastest ever marathon time? The current official world record stands at 2:01:39 with Kenyan runner Eliud Kipchoge clocking the time at the Berlin Marathon in 2018.
His official average speed clocked at 13.16mph (21.18 kmph). His average time per 100m was 17.02 seconds, 200m at 34.03, 400m at 01:08.06, 800m at 02:16.13 and 1,500m at 04:15.3.
The fact that it was both pace-set and out-of-competition meant it was not an official world record. But what has been a little controversial are his shoes: the Kenyan wore a bespoke version of the Nike Vaporfly trainers – called AlphaFly – a major innovation in the sport which has seen performances sharply improve.
Shizo Kanakuri is the exception. He holds the world record for the slowest time in the Olympic marathon. He finished the race after 54 years, eight months, six days, 5 hours and 32 minutes.
Eliud Kipchoge's training involves a lot of running, some track, and core sessions. The training drafted by coach Sang mainly involves a morning and an afternoon workout. “The long run, we do once every two weeks,†Sang told NN Running in a documentary. “The idea is to alternate.
He is the 2016 and 2020 Olympic marathon winner. In addition, he set the world record in the marathon with a time of 2:01:39 at the 2018 Berlin Marathon. His run broke the previous world record by 1 minute and 18 seconds. He has been described as "the greatest marathoner of the modern era".
“I want to inspire many people, that no human is limited.†His challenge aside, Kipchoge would have gone down as the greatest marathon runner of all time, anyway. He has won 12 of the 13 marathons he's entered during his running career, including the Rio 2016 Olympic Games marathon, and four London marathons.
Finish line for Eliud Kipchoge! We've finally reached a calorie count of 2,322 kcal, the total energy Eliud burned when he set a new world record in 2018. And incredibly he used up almost the entire daily recommended calorie intake for an average adult male of 2,500 kcal - all in just 2 hours, 1 minute and 39 seconds.
Eliud Kipchoge is the only person who has ever run a marathon in under 2 hours.
