Grind Your Own BeansIf you've made the switch to the reusable My K-Cup and you're still getting weak coffee, try grinding your own beans. The ground level is important because the more coffee that the water comes into contact with during the extraction process, the stronger your resulting coffee will be.

So use care to only fill the filter to just under the plastic rim. Actually, probably the worst aspect of the whole My K-Cup experience is filling this little filter with coffee grounds. It's easiest with a spoon, but still sort of a pain. A very fine espresso grind may clog the filter and cause the same problem.
Big Savings- More FlavorBrewing with a reusable K Cup without a filter typically means a weaker cup of coffee, since water flows through the K Cup faster and doesn't have a chance to collect flavor as it's passing through.

Are There Compostable K-Cups® pods? When left whole, K-Cups® pods are not biodegradable, as their plastic and aluminum elements will not break down naturally, and the organic material is sealed inside. However, by separating the coffee pod, you can compost its leftover coffee grounds and paper filter.
K-Cups have been confirmed to be BPA-free and made of “safe” plastic, but some studies show that even this type of material can have harmful effects when heated.
But there's an upside: capsules turn out to be a more sustainable way of drinking espresso than nearly any other method of making coffee. And according to new research, recyclable aluminium pods are more environmentally friendly than all other capsules, whether they are made from plastic or compostable materials.

The standard ratio for brewing coffee is 1-2 tablespoons of ground coffee per 6 ounces of water – 1 tablespoon for lighter coffee and 2 for stronger coffee. That 6-ounce measure is equivalent to one “cup” in a standard coffeemaker, but keep in mind that the standard mug size is closer to 12 ounces or larger.

Let's use Starbucks as an example. Starbucks cups for Keurig pods have the following amount of caffeine: Standard pod: 130mg per 8 fluid ounces. Plus pod: 260mg per 8 fluid ounces.
I took a single K-Cup and used it to make two 6-ounce cups of coffee. That's small cups, not mugs, which are more like 8 or 10 ounces each. On the left you can see the first 6-ounce cup of coffee.
To use, simply:
- Fill the reusable capsule base with your favourite ground coffee (whether it be organic, fair trade, or even decaf).
- Apply the lid to the top of the refillable pod (most utilise either a stainless steel, aluminium, or silicone lid).
- Pop the capsule into your machine as normal, and brew a shot.
To make five cups of coffee at average strength, use 45 grams of coffee and 25 ounces (3 measuring cups) of water. That's about 5 level scoops of coffee, or 10 level tablespoons. To make the coffee strong, use 51 grams of coffee (5 2/3 scoops or 11 1/3 tablespoons).
