Bolt pattern or bolt circle is the diameter of an imaginary circle formed by the centers of the wheel lugs. Bolt patterns can be 4-, 5-, 6-, or 8-lug holes. A bolt circle of 4x100 would indicate a 4-lug pattern on a circle with a diameter of 100mm. The diagram (upper, left) indicates the proper measuring methods.

Drill a 1/8-in. hole through every inch mark on a ruler or yard-stick. To draw a circle, place a pin through the number “1” into the center of your board. Add 1 in. to the radius of the circle you wish to draw, and insert a pencil into this number.The formula for the chord length is: 2rsin(theta/2) where r is the radius of the circle and theta is the angle from the centre of the circle to the two points of the chord.
Bolt Circle Diameter (BCD) is the diameter of the circle that goes through the center of all of the bolts on your chainring. On bicycle chainrings this dimension is usually measured in millimeters. It is critical to know the BCD of your crankset when you are selecting a new chainring for your bike.
Look at the photos and compare to your crank or chainrings. Find the number of bolts in the circle (Left Column) and the approximate measurement (metric or English) between adjacent holes. Find those numbers in the table, then in the Right Column you'll see the Bolt Circle Diameter (BCD).
For a 4 lug wheel, measure center to center of two holes directly across from each other. Measuring a 6 bolt wheel requires you to measure center to center of two holes directly across from each other. To measure an 8 lug bolt pattern, measure center to center of two holes directly across from each other.
To calculate the P.C.D. of a three stud wheel or hub measure between two holes next to each other (as with five stud below) and multiply by 1.154. The P.C.D. of any wheel or hub with an even number of holes can be measured from the inside of one hole directly across to the outside of the hole opposite.
The simplest way I know of to measure the distance between two hole of the same diameter is measure the diameter of one hole and zero your digital caliper at that size. Using the inside jaws of the caliper measure from the far edge of one hole to the far edge of the other hole. The display will show you the distance.
7 bolt pattern, also called 5x5. 5", has been used for decades in the Dodge Ram 1500 trucks. It is also used in some older Fords, and other manufacturers such as Kia, Suzuki, and Mitsubishi. The Dodge Rams are very common, which results in many wheel options being produced in this bolt pattern.

4 lug and 5 lug wheels are only capable of fitting two lug patterns. Since there are several different 5 lug patterns : 5x100, 5x108, 5x110, 5x112, 5x114.
The 5x127 bolt pattern, also called 5x5", is most commonly known for it's use in the 2007 and newer Jeep Wranglers. When measuring a 4 lug or 6 lug, the P.C.D. (pitch circle diameter) or bolt pattern diameter will be the distance measured. So if you get 4.5 inches, you have a 4X4. 5 bolt pattern (four on four and a half).
5×114.3, also known as 5×4.5 is a very common bolt pattern used on many Honda, Nissan, Infiniti, Lexus, Toyota, Hyundai, Ford, and more.
What Vehicles Use Wheels With 5 X 4.5 Bolt Pattern? The 5 X 4.5 bolt pattern is common to FORD, MAZDA, LEXUS, TOYOTA, MERCURY, MITSUBISHI, HONDA, DODGE, NISSAN, ACURA, CHRYSLER, INFINITI and other vehicles.
For example, if you have a 5 lug wheel and your measurement is 5" then your bolt pattern is 5 x 5" (5 x 127mm).
On a 4 bolt chainring you can simply measure the distance between the centres of opposite bolts. This will give you the BCD for a 4 hole chainring.
The outer nut has a standard external diameter of 10mm so theoretically the bolts can be used to fit any chainset. However, bolts are available in different lengths for different applications, e.g. for single or double chainrings (a double-chainring bolt being necessarily longer than a single-ring one).
Bolt circle diameter is the measure from the center of a bolt hole to the center of the hole on the opposite side. Also, consider the number of bolt holes in the flange and be sure to measure the bolt hole itself.
