“Smart quotes” are the ideal form of quotation marks and apostrophes, and are commonly curly or sloped. "Dumb quotes," or straight quotes, are a vestigial constraint from typewriters when using one key for two different marks helped save space on a keyboard.
How to use smart and dumb quotes. 1. Type Shift + ' to add a double quote, which Google Docs defaults to using Smart Quotes for. They're called Smart because they automatically identify if they should be formatted as start or end quotes.
How do I set up and follow up a quotation?
- Provide context for each quotation. Do not rely on quotations to tell your story for you.
- Attribute each quotation to its source. Tell your reader who is speaking.
- Explain the significance of the quotation.
- Provide a citation for the quotation.

Dialogue should be enclosed within quotation marks. Each new line of dialogue is indented, and a new paragraph should be started every time a new person is speaking. It should be concise. Basics. According to the APA manual, quotations that are 40 words or more are considered block quotations and are formatted differently than regular quotations. The text after the block quotation begins on its own line, with no indentation.

- Make sure the name of the person who said the quote is not in an introductory phrase, but part of the subject. The subject of the sentence should use the name of the person who said the quote.

APA Style Guide: Block QuoteBlock quotes are used for direct quotations that are longer than 40 words. They should be offset from the main text and do not include quotation marks. Introduce the block quote on a new line. Indent the entire quote ½ inch or 5-7 spaces; the block quote may be single-spaced.
Create a hanging indent
- Select the text where you want to add a hanging indent.
- Go to Home > Paragraph dialog launcher. > Indents and Spacing.
- Under Special, select Hanging. You can adjust the depth of the indent using the By field.
- Select OK.
When making reference to the spoken words of someone other than the author recorded in a text, cite the name of the person and the name of the author, date and page reference of the work in which the quote or reference appears.
Modern Language Association
The block quote is used for direct quotations that are longer than four lines of prose, or longer than three lines of poetry. A block quote is always used when quoting dialogue between characters, as in a play. The block format is a freestanding quote that does not include quotation marks.

When Quoting Four or More Lines of Poetry:Include the author's name, the title(s) of the poem(s), and the line number(s) in the text (for better source inte- gration) or within a parenthetical citation.
Use “double quotation marks” to indicate the secondary source, and 'single quotation marks' to indicate the quote itself. You may also need to include a parenthetical citation after the author's surname. When following APA citation guidelines, you will include the publication year after the name of the writer.
Remember that all quotations must be properly cited. What is a Direct Quotation? A direct quotation is when you take another person's words and place them in your own document. These must always be placed inside quotation marks and given appropriate attribution (MLA, APA, Chicago, etc).
Double space between the title and the first line of the text. Create a header in the upper right-hand corner that includes your last name, followed by a space with a page number. Number all pages consecutively with Arabic numerals (1, 2, 3, 4, etc.), one-half inch from the top and flush with the right margin.
How to paraphrase in five steps
- Read the passage several times to fully understand the meaning.
