Make a citation at the end of the sentence when the act and scene are not mentioned in the sentence. Place the act number, a period and the scene number first, followed by a comma. Add the line numbers that encompass the referenced material.
Type the author's last name, followed by a comma and one space. Then type the author's last name, followed by a period. For example: Miller, Arthur. Begin the next sentence with the title of the work, "The Crucible," immediately followed by a period.

When citing a direct quote by someone who is not the author of the source, you should introduce the person in your writing, use double quotation marks for the quote, rather than the usual single quotation marks for direct quotes by the author of the source, and add the page number within the bracketed citation, or, for

- Punctuation always goes inside the quotation marks if it is a direct quote.

The reference includes the name of the author and initial, the year in brackets, the title of the document in italics, the word online in square brackets, the place of publication, the publisher, the words available from: followed by the URL, and the date when the document was accessed in brackets.
An in-text citation is the brief form of the reference that you include in the body of your work. It gives enough information to uniquely identify the source in your reference list.
The in-text citation is very simple: (Author, year) - it generally only consists of the author's last name, a comma, and the year of publication. The in-text citation has only the author's last name - no initials! Always include the year of publication.
Cite web pages in text as you would any other source, using the author and date if known. Keep in mind that the author may be an organization rather than a person. For sources with no author, use the title in place of an author. For sources with no date use n.d. (for no date) in place of the year: (Smith, n.d.).
An MLA website citation includes the author's name, the title of the page (in quotation marks), the name of the website (in italics), the publication date, and the URL (without “). If the author is unknown, start with the title of the page instead.
When formatting your in-text citations, keep these points in mind:
- Italicize the title of the play.
- Do not include page numbers.
- Do not place a comma after the title of the play.
- Separate the act, scene and lines with periods.
- Enclose your citation in parentheses.
When you quote a single line of a poem (or part of a line), simply put it in quotation marks as you would for any other quote. If you quote two or three lines, use a forward slash to mark the line breaks. Put a space before and after the slash.
