Put the cursor on the page where the page numbering should start (that is section two in the document). Click on the Insert tab and Page Number. Select position and style for the pagination. Click on the bottom of the page to activate the Header & Footer menu.
Open the Page Layout ribbon at the top of the screen and choose Breaks (Section Breaks) and Next Page. Highlight the Footer of the page you wish to start numbering from and you should see Link to Previous - click this once. Choose Insert - Page Number, and select the page numbers format you want.

To put a page number to each page of your document, select the page number position on the page. To insert a page number at the current cursor position, select the To Current Position option. Page numbering is the process of applying a sequence of numbers (or letters, or roman numerals) to the pages of a book or other document. The number itself, which may appear in various places on the page, can be referred to as a page number or as a folio.
How to start page numbers on page 2
- Click on the page. Click the first page you want to have page numbers.
- In 'Layout,' select 'Next Page'
- Double click on the header or footer you want the page number to appear in.
- Unselect 'Link to Previous'
- Go to 'Page Numbers'
- Format the page number.
- Exit out of all windows and the header menu.
To do this, go to the page where you want numbering to start and click "Layout" then click "Breaks" and "Next Page." Double-click the header or footer where you want the page numbers to appear, and in the menu that pops up, uncheck the "Link to Previous" button, then click "Page Number" and pick the settings you want.
Press Alt+Shift+P to insert a PAGE field. In the Header & Footer group of the contextual Header & Footer Tools | Design tab, click Page Number and choose Format Page Numbers In the Page Number Format dialog, choose the radio button for "Continue from previous section."
To add page numbers to your Word document, switch over to the “Insert” tab on the Ribbon and then click the “Page Number” button in the “Header & Footer” section. A drop-down menu shows several different options for where you'd like the page numbers to appear—top of the page, bottom of the page, and so on.
Use the Page field code to insert page numbers
- Double-click the header or the footer area (near the top or bottom of the page).
- Go to Header & Footer > Field.
- In the Field names list, Select Page, and then select OK.
- To change the numbering format, go to Header & Footer > Page Number > Format Page Numbers.
To change the start at value, proceed as follows:
- Position the cursor in the section of the document whose start at value you want to change.
- Go into the Header or Footer.
- On the Header/Footer toolbar, click the Format Page Numbers button:
- Click Start At and enter the desired value.
- Click OK to close the dialog.
