GROWING LOTUS IN POTS, BOWLS & PLANTERS
Normal tap water is fine to use. It's also important to re-pot your lotus into a larger pot or bowl after you purchase. We suggest bowls and pots wider than 40cm with a depth of 20cm for small varieties and 80cm wide with a depth of 30cm for larger varieties.Lotus seeds takes 2-3 days to sprout. Germinated lotus seeds must be planted in a pot having atleast 20 inch diameter and 15 inch depth. Sprouted lotus should be planted after 15-20 days . Soil for lotus should be sticky and having no other foreign materials.
A lotus does not need a pond to grow. All that is necessary is a no holes container and a few inches of water above the soil.
Lotus flowers have great ornamental value throughout their lifecycles. They bloom one after another. Therefore, though each flower only lasts three to four days, a group of them in a temperate area can bloom for one-and-a-half months in northern China and up to three months in southern China.
Most pond plants do not need soil to grow. Rinse the roots of the plant with water to remove any soil or debris before adding it the the pond. Place floating plants on the surface of the water to allow them to drift freely around the pond.
If you're not planning on keeping the plants thriving for years, it is possible to grow hardy water lilies successfully in containers as small as 15 gallons. To do so well indoors, however, requires a few extraordinary measures.
Many seed starters cover the container to keep soil moist until seeds germinate. Once seeds sprout, don't miss a watering. Unlike established plants, seedlings don't have an extensive root system they can rely on for vital moisture. At the same time, it's important not to overwater and let seedlings sit in water.

Lotus need at least 5+ hours of DIRECT sunlight to grow and bloom. If your lotus is only getting late afternoon sunlight, the rays of the sun might not be strong enough for your lotus to bloom. Try relocating your lotus container to a sunnier spot, making sure to not disturb the tuber or roots.
Steps
- Scrape the seed with a file.
- Place your seeds in warm water.
- Fill a 3 to 5 US gal (11 to 19 L) container with 6 in (15 cm) of deep soil.
- Remove seedlings from water once they are 6 inches (15 cm) long.
- Press the sprouted seeds into the soil about 4 inches (10 cm) apart.
- Lower the pot into your pond.
Replant large lotuses every two to three years; repot a bowl lotus annually. Do the work in early spring when the plant is dormant, before new growth begins. Remove the lotus pot from the pond or winter storage and carefully turn it upside down to remove the plant from the container.
Bowl lotus is a term given to the smallest growing lotus. The bowl lotus produce small leaves, small flowers and rhizomes. Bowl lotus are frequently grown in small containers: 7 inches (18 cm) to 11 inches (28 cm) in diameter and a depth of only 6 inches (15 cm) to 8 inches (20 cm).

Lotuses do not bloom during the cold of winter. Summer, or the season of Fire, is when the Lotus blossoms. In spring, and through the summer, the plant is vigorously growing, enjoying the warmth and humidity. The flowers open in response to sunlight, usually opening in the morning and closing in the afternoon.
The stems of lotus contain air pockets throughout their length that enables the leaves and flowers to float above water. More over the leaves are flattened and leathery which allows them to float without becoming waterlogged.

How to Grow a Lotus Plant Inside a Home
- Soak a lotus tuber in a plastic container of warm water until it begins producing sprouts.
- Fill a plastic nondraining planter with 3 inches of clay soil.
- Very gently place the lotus tuber into the pot.
- Gradually add soil over the tuber so that there is a depth of 1 inch of soil above the top of the plant.
