Answer Expert VerifiedClosing stock is the goods that remain unsold at the end of the year. It is valued at Cost price or Realisable Value, whichever is less.
The formula for Calculating Opening Stock
- Opening Stock Formula = Raw Material Cost + Work in Progress Values + Finished Goods Cost.
- Opening Stock Formula = Sales – Gross Profit – Cost of Goods Sold + Closing Stock.
- Opening Stock Formula = Net Sales – Purchases – Gross Margin + Closing Stock.
Therefore, as closing inventory is not consumed at any given accounting period end, it must not be part of expense which is why it is deducted from the cost of sale. Similarly, as opening inventory is consumed in the current accounting period, it must therefore be added to the cost of goods sold.
Use the following steps to calculate closing inventory by the gross profit method:
- Add the cost of beginning inventory to the cost of purchases during the period.
- Multiply the gross profit percentage by sales to find the estimated cost of goods sold.
Example calculationThe calculation with opening and closing stock is: (Opening stock – closing stock ) £10,000 – £5,000 = £5,000, this is your cost of sales. (Sales – cost of sales) £12,000 – £5,000 = £7,000 profit. This takes into account your closing stock and is a more accurate profit.
Debit : Closing Stock a/cAssets are represented by real accounts. They carry a debit balance. By recording the journal entry for bringing the value of closing stock into books, we create the asset by name Closing Stock a/c. For this we have to debit the Closing Stock a/c.
In Trading and Profit and Loss account, opening stock appears on the debit side because it forms the part of the cost of sales for the current accounting year.
Closing Stock is an amount of unsold stock lying in your business on a given date. In simple words, it's the inventory which is still in your business waiting to be sold for a given period. The closing stock can be in various forms such as raw materials, in-process goods (WIP) or finished goods.
Opening Stock is the amount and value of materials that a company has available for sale or use at the beginning of an accounting period. The closing Stock of the previous accounting period becomes the opening Stock of the current accounting period.
