Alexa is able to play music, provide information, deliver news and sports scores, tell you the weather, control your smart home and even allow Prime members to order products from Amazon. The Echo devices with a display can also return visual information, extending beyond widgets to news videos, recipes or games.
However, the Echo Plus is mostly limited to lights, outlets, and smart locks right now, and the Alexa app can't really do anything with those extra sensors. It can directly control Philips Hue lights, without the need for the Philips Hue Bridge, which other smart home hubs need to piggyback off of.
Make sure your Hue bulbs are connected and powered on, then head into the Alexa app for Android and iOS (which you should have already installed when setting up your Echo). Select Devices, then the Plus button, then Add Device. After a few seconds of searching, your Hue lights should be detected and added.
To discover smart home devices using a skill, in the Alexa app: Go to the menu, and then select Skills. Find the skill for your device, and then select Enable. Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the linking process.
To get started, select the "Enable Skill" button in the Alexa App to link your Philips Hue account and say, "Alexa, discover devices”. The Philips Hue SmartHome skill functionality is only compatible with the Philips Hue Bridge V2 (square shape).
Reset a Philips Hue bulb
From the main screen of the app, tap the menu button (three dots, top right), and choose Light setup. Select the "i" icon next to the bulb or light you want to reset, then tap Delete. How do I change the Network Name (SSID) of the WIZ WiFi Router ?
- Type 192.168.0.1 into your favorite web browser.
- Log in with the supplied credentials.
- After successfully logging in, go on DEVICE SETTINGS, then click on WLAN SETTINGS.
- After the WLAN setting window opens, click on edit.
- Under the edit menu look for SSID and replace it with the new Network Name.
- Click on Save.
Amazon has a feature called “routines” inside the Alexa app that lets you do things like schedule the outlet to turn on or off at certain times. It's good if you want the lights to automatically turn on at 6 p.m. on weekdays, for example.
You don't need to rewire your home to control your lights by voice with Alexa. You simply need to buy smart LED bulbs that can connect to WiFi or a smart hub that's compatible with Amazon's Echo. With Alexa and your voice, you can turn the bulbs on or off.
Amazon just rolled out Alexa Guard to all Echo users. Your Echo can now listen for breaking glass, alert you to smoke alarms, and randomly turn your lights on and off.
The Echo can control all 20 or so lights I have, however, when using groups to control multiple switches with a single command I have found 4-5 are all that will respond instead of all of them.
Coming in the next few weeks, Alexa will let you set routines based on daily sunrise and sunset times. Once the routine is set up, the lights and plugs will be switched on by the Alexa app when the sun sets - which of course varies each day.
