- Set your vacuum to its highest setting. Shag carpeting is just that; it's shaggy.
- Vacuum the rug thoroughly to suck up all the dirt. Continue vacuuming until your rug starts to come back to life.
- Flip the rug over and vacuum the back.
- Outside, shake out the rug before setting it back in place.
Instructions
- Move your furniture: Clear any furniture off the carpet to access the whole surface area.

Since most rugs are not small enough to put into your washing machine and dryer, using a pressure washer is a great option to do it yourself. Regular vacuuming can help keep your rugs looking good longer between cleanings but most vacuums struggle to get the dirt deep within the pile of the rug.
Carpets. If your carpet is just a little musty, you can sprinkle baking soda and then vacuum it up (similar to the mattress trick). However, you can also scrub out carpet stains using baking soda and water. After the power dries, you can still just vacuum it up.
To start, fill the bucket with warm water and ¼ cup white vinegar. Take the scrub brush and dip it into the bucket. Start to scrub the carpet with the cleaning solution. You want enough of the mixture on the scrub brush to get the carpet a little wet, but not saturated.

You may be tempted to toss it in the dryer, but the heat can shrink the rug and damage the backing. If you'd like to get any last wrinkles out, use an iron or put it in the dryer on tumble dry low/air cycle.

Work in multiple angles to saturate the carpet fibers with sodium bicarbonate. Leave the baking soda for a whole night on the carpet and vacuum the following morning.

Rest an ice cube on a small dent, such as an indentation left behind by a chair leg. As the cube melts, run a stiff nylon brush over the area to straighten carpet fibers.

How To Clean Area Rugs Yourself

Do not use dish soap for carpet cleaning or any kind of liquid soap. People often are able to remove a carpet stain with a mixture of dish soap and water only to find that the stain returns and is even worse than before.
