The iPhone 12, 12 mini, 12 Pro, and 12 Pro Max are capable of shooting 4K video using HDR with Dolby Vision, producing content unthinkable in an Apple smartphone just years ago. If you're someone who opens the Camera app, switches over to video mode, then taps the record button, this issue isn't likely to affect you.
Use the YouTube app to play videos in 4K resolution. They won't play in 4K resolution if the YouTube videos are played using the TV internet browser.
Playing 4K videos
- Search the YouTube app for the 4K video you want to watch. Press the HOME button.
- Set the Youtube Video Quality to 4K.
- Enable the Motionflow settings.
Apple has made it incredibly simple to get the upgrade – you don't have to do anything. You can check the quality of your digital film collection by checking the 4K HDR section of the Library tab within the Apple TV app. Apple TV replaced iTunes with the arrival of macOS Catalina last year.
Choose how to listen to Dolby Atmos on your iPhone or iPad
- Update your iPhone or iPad to the latest version of iOS or iPadOS.
- Go to Settings.
- Tap Music.
- Under Audio, tap Dolby Atmos.
- Choose Automatic, Always On, or turn Dolby Atmos off.
You can watch purchased 4K UHD quality movies using the YouTube app on eligible Smart TVs and Android TVs, or with a Chromecast Ultra (with 4K displays capable of HDCP 2.2). UHD playback requires a faster internet connection than HD or SD videos as YouTube needs to stream much more data.
A 4K TV simply boosts that pixel count: Usually, 4K refers to a display resolution of 2160p, or 3,840 x 2,160 pixels. That's roughly four times larger than a 1080p picture, hence the term "4K." (Technically, 4K isn't the same as 2160p, but the technical differences are so minor that it doesn't really matter.)

4k resolution is clearer than 1440p because it has more pixels. A 1440p means a measure of 2560 pixels in width and a height of 1440 pixels. For 4k resolution, the width is 3860 pixels, and a height of 2160 pixels.
Before you open the Camera app, you need to check your HDR settings in the Settings app. Go to Settings > Camera. Then ensure Smart HDR (Auto HDR on older iPhones) is switched off. If Smart HDR is on, you won't have the HDR option in the Camera app.
To enable HDR video on your iPhone, first, open the “Settings†app, and then scroll down to the Camera option. Next, select “Record Video.†Finally, toggle on “HDR Video (High Efficiency).â€
iMovie for iOSCreate a movie project in iMovie on iPhone, edit your movie, then share your movie. When sharing your movie, tap Options, then turn the HDR switch on to export your movie in HDR. To share a Standard Dynamic Range (SDR) version of your movie for use on SDR displays, turn the HDR switch off.
How to View HDR Photos on the iPhone
- Open the Photos app.
- Tap All Photos.
- If you have an older iPhone and have turned the Keep Normal Photo setting on, you'll see both the normal photo without HDR and the HDR picture.
- When selected, photos that are HDR will say so in the top left corner of the preview.
Smart HDR uses AI and other computational photography techniques to splice together the best photo. Essentially, the feature takes a series of exposures before and after you hit the photo shutter to capture all the bright highlights, mid-tones, and dark shadows.
