How Do You Tell A Year From A Yamaha VIN? Look for the 10th character of your Yamaha VIN for finding the year of the model. If it lies between J to Y, the year would be 1998 to 2000 respectively. If it's a digit, for instance, 2 will stand for the year 2002, 5 will stand for the year 2005, and so on.
Find it in the lower corner of your windshield on the driver's side. Your VIN number is your vehicle identification number and you can find your engine size by VIN number. In the series of numbers and letters, the tenth from the left denotes the model year and the eighth is the engine codes.
On a Suzuki, you will see J signifying Japan, followed by S for Suzuki and 1 for motorcycle. Recognize the next five digits as the VDS or Vehicle Descriptor Section that gives information about the vehicles specifications. Locate the fourth digit of the VDS. This gives the model version by number.

The number at the top right is the Yamaha model number and year. The number denotes the outboard's HP, and the last letter denotes the outboard's year of manufacture. In the picture above, the F225TXRC outboard's 225 means it's 225HP and it was manufactured in 2004.
How to Read a Yamaha VIN Number
- Locate the VIN on your Yamaha.

They have been fast, fun, and reliable. I just sold my '02 YZ250 and bought an '06 of the same model. I've ridden a bunch of different 4 Strokes, and I still love a 2 stroke! They're lighter and couldn't be easier to work on.

The VIN number on a dirt bike is on the neck of the bike, close to the steering head. On every make, model, and type of vehicle, on or off road, they all come with a unique identifying VIN number.
The 17 character Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) is displayed on the registration certificate. It can also be found on the vehicle itself, either on the compliance plate located in the engine bay or on one of the door posts (where the door latches when it is closed), or on the passenger side windshield.
Examine the dirt bike closely. If there are no recognizable make or manufacturer emblems on the body, chances are the vehicle was manufactured in China. If the emblems cannot be identified or are not recognizable, the dirt bike is probably Chinese.

The dirt bike engine number is an 11 digit identifier usually located on the right side of the engine case near the kickstarter (or where the kickstarter used to be if the bike has e-start).
Check the first digit of the VIN. This letter or number represents the country in which the bike was manufactured. For example, a bike made in Japan will have "J" for Japan, and a motorcycle made in the U.S. will have a "1," a "4" or a "5". The second letter of the VIN represents the manufacturer.
