Google Hangouts is a unified communications service that allows members to initiate and participate in text, voice or video chats, either one-on-one or in a group. Hangouts are built into Google+ and Gmail, and mobile Hangouts apps are available for iOS and Android devices.
Despite being available for free on both iOS and Android, Google Hangouts is riddled with privacy and security concerns. Though it does encrypt hangout conversations, it doesn't use end-to-end encryption — instead, messages are encrypted “in transit”. Once they are on a server, Google has complete access to them.
Google Hangouts Now Lets You Invite Anyone, Even Those Without Google Accounts. Hangouts organizers still need a Google account. But once they launch their Hangout, they can invite "external guests" (that's the term Google is using for anyone without a Google account) to join the conference via Google Calendar.
Start a conversation
- On your Android phone or tablet, open the Hangouts app .

In a web browser, open
- Click Settings. and select General. After the meeting starts, click General.
- Choose a setting you want to change: Camera—Under Video, select your camera device. If your camera is working, to the right of Video, you'll see your video feed.

Start a conversation
- On your computer, go to hangouts.google.com or open Hangouts in Gmail. If you have the Hangouts Chrome extension, Hangouts will open in a new window.
- At the top, click New conversation .
- Enter and select a name or email address.
- Type your message.
- On your keyboard, press Enter.
How to make voice calls on your computer using Google Hangouts
- Go to Google Hangouts.
- Select the telephone icon with the words "Phone Call" under it from the front page.
- A window will appear on the right side of the screen.
- Your call will be initiated.
How to disable the Google Hangouts video in the calendar event
- Sign in to the Google Admin console.
- Click G Suite -> Calendar.
- Click Sharing settings.
- Under Video Calls, uncheck Automatically add video calls to events created by a user.
Muting helps avoid any disruptions or distractions caused by background noise. To mute yourself, click the Microphone icon in the menu at the top of the Hangouts window. You may also use the keyboard shortcut <Ctrl> + D or the command “/mute” in Hangouts chat to mute your mic.
You can install the Hangremote Chrome extension, that allows to start OFF/ON mic/cam by default. Simply turn on “No camera at start”. It also allows you to fully control remote Hangouts. All newer implementations of Hangouts have a separate Voice and Video call button now.
Start a video or voice call
- On your Android device, open the Duo app.
- Tap a name to call.
- Choose Video call or Voice call .
- When done, tap End call .
FaceTime is not supported by Google devices or platforms, including GMail.
Google Duo is a video and audio calling app made by Google, similar to Apple's FaceTime, Facebook's WhatsApp or Messenger and Microsoft's Skype. Duo is free to use, enables one-to-one video and voice calls and it works across both iOS and Android devices - unlike Apple's FaceTime.
To make that gmail id to be the caller id or to initiate calls from that gmail id, make sure you select that gmail id, under Caller Id. This should do what Facetime is not tied to your Apple ID. Under settings→Facetime → add your email id that should be your gmail id.

Find someone's contact info on Hangouts

Normally Hangout links expire shortly after everyone leaves the Hangout, but if you attach a Hangout to a repeating event, the link will last forever.

You can easily schedule a Google Hangout via the Google Calendar site. You can invite multiple guests to attend your Google Hangout on a date and at a time of your choice. Those you invite to your Google Hangout will receive an email alerting them to the Hangout.
