Read-only Files
- Open Windows Explorer and navigate to the file you want to edit.
- Right-click the file name and select "Properties."
- Select the "General" tab and clear the "Read-only" check box to remove the read-only attribute or select the check the box to set it.
- Click the Windows "Start" button and type "cmd" in the Search field.
Step 1: Right-click the Word document that is locked for editing and chooses to open with WordPad. Step 2: Now the Word document is unlocked automatically. You can edit it in your way. Step 3: Click the top left icon and choose Save.
Restore Previous Versions (PC) – In Windows, if you right-click on a file, and go to “Properties,” you will see an option titled “Previous Versions.” This option can help you revert to a version of your file before the overwrite occurred, allowing you to get your data back.
In Word, select the File Menu, and then select Open. In the Files of type box, select Recover Text from Any File(.). Select the document from which you want to recover the text. Select Open.
Click the File tab. Click Info. Click Manage Versions. Click Recover Unsaved Documents if you are in Word, Recover Unsaved Workbooks if you are in Excel or Recover Unsaved Presentations if you are in PowerPoint.
As we've mentioned, the default autosave location for Word is the AppData folder. Microsoft Word can save the files in various locations, including C:UsersYour_usernameAppDataLocalMicrosoftWord and C:UsersYour_usernameAppDataLocalTemp. Most recent versions of the program use a different location.
Click the File menu. On the File menu, click Info. On the Info page, click “Manage Document” and then, from the drop-down menu, choose “Recover Unsaved Documents.” Note also that you have an option for deleting all unsaved documents should you want to do that. Select the file you need and then click Open.
If the document was saved at least once and AutoRecover was enabled in Word > Preferences, you can force-quit Word, as it will detect the AutoRecover files next time around and offer you to recover the file.
If, the Word file which you are unable to edit is saved on any removable storage device, then copy the document to your computer's hard drive and try to edit. Make sure Office program is activated successfully on your computer. And, if you are using a trial version, ensure it is not expired.
Go to File / Manage Document and click on the File tab. Now select “Document Management”, then “Recover Unsaved Documents”. In the new window, you will see a list of all unsaved Word documents. Select the documents you are interested in and click Open.
Go to File > Options > Save. Check that the AutoSave box is ticked.
Corrupt Word documents contain errors in their data that prevent Word from opening them correctly. In some cases, Word can repair corrupt files, but others will not work at all. In cases of unrepairable corruption, you will need to restore from a backup or download the file over again.
How to recover an unsaved Word document using Microsoft Word 2010, Word 2013, and Word 2016
- Click the File tab / Manage Documents.
- Click the Manage Document button.
- From the drop down list, click Recover Unsaved Documents.
- The Open dialog box opens displaying a list of your unsaved recoverable Word documents.
