No one person or group of people can own a nonprofit organization. Ownership is the major difference between a for-profit business and a nonprofit organization. But nonprofit organizations do not have private owners and they do not issue stock or pay dividends.
It's not hard to start a nonprofit. The barriers to entry are pretty low. Find a name, get an EIN, register with your state, file a 1023-EZ. Running a nonprofit and growing it to a size where it can most effectively serve its constituents takes resources.

The answer is “it's complicated.†Generally, you need an investment of $500 at a bare minimum, but costs can be as high as $1,000 or more.
So how is a nonprofit able to pay its employees? The basic premise is fairly simple: all wages, like in any other business, are considered an expense. If a nonprofit requires employees, the employees' wages are simply costs of doing business.
Missouri charges a $25 filing fee for non-profit Articles of Incorporation. The fee for an initial registration statement is $15, but 501(c)(3) nonprofits are exempt from this requirement. Missouri's fee for filing an annual report is $15.
The state of California requires a minimum of one board member for each organization. It is recommended that your organization have at least three since the IRS will most likely not give 501(c)(3) status to an organization with less. 3-25 directors are recommended based on the size and purpose of your nonprofit.

Is there a simple way to register with every state? Unfortunately not. Most states require you to complete a general information form and submit it with your last financial statement, a list of officers and directors, a copy of your originating document and your IRS-issued tax-exempt determination letter.
If you file Form 1023, the average IRS processing time is 3-6 months. Processing times of 9 or 12 months are not unheard of. The IRS closely scrutinizes these applications, as the applicants are typically large or complex organizations.
First, there is the required IRS Form 1023 User Fee, which is now $600 (as of March, 2018) regardless of your organization's projected future income. This application fee is made online as part of your application to the United States Treasury and submitted as part of your 501c3 application packet.
Can a Nonprofit Sell Goods or Merchandise? A nonprofit can sell goods and often this is completed through donations or grants. Nonprofits can also sell services or goods to raise money. Consider that educational institutions and hospitals are nonprofit organizations, but still sell services or goods.
