Process
- Open SQL Server Management Studio, and connect to the database engine of the instance that you wish to check the version of.
- Perform the following three steps; Click the New Query button (or, hit CTRL+N on your keyboard).
- The results pane will appear, showing you: Your version of SQL (Microsoft SQL Server 2012)
The higher the version of the database the newer the database is. The first number represents a major release of a new version, the number after the point represents an update of the version in question.
The latest Oracle version, the 19C, was released in early January 2019. It's been noted as the long term release for the 12.2 product family of Oracle databases. This particular version will be supported through 2023, with extended support available until 2026.

To connect to Oracle Database from SQL*Plus:
- If you are on a Windows system, display a Windows command prompt.
- At the command prompt, type sqlplus and press the key Enter. SQL*Plus starts and prompts you for your user name.
- Type your user name and press the key Enter.
- Type your password and press the key Enter.
Simplest method is to run command prompt and type sqlplus it will show you the oracle version without actually logging into it. Microsoft Windows [Version 6.1.
To start or shut down Oracle Database:
- Go to your Oracle Database server.
- Start SQL*Plus at the command prompt: C:> sqlplus /NOLOG.
- Connect to Oracle Database with username SYSDBA: SQL> CONNECT / AS SYSDBA.
- To start a database, enter: SQL> STARTUP [PFILE=pathfilename]
- To stop a database, enter: SQL> SHUTDOWN [mode]
The Oracle Client is what connects your applications with your database. Almost all client side applications use it. Generally applications will either use the Oracle Client directly (such as our SQL tool Golden) or will use a connectivity option such as ODBC, OLEDB, .
In normal situation, we can check the edition of Oracle 10/11g using SQLPlus. Just login using SQLPlus, and there will be a connention message on top of the SQL prompt, stating that the Oracle is either Standard or Enterprise.

Oracle Real Application Clusters (Oracle RAC) is included with Oracle Database Standard Edition. You cannot purchase any options with Oracle Database Standard Edition One or Oracle Express Edition.

The database naming standard should be designed to minimize name changes across environments.
Oracle Database Standard Edition 2 (SE2) can be licensed and used on servers with a maximum capacity of 2 CPU sockets. As of 19c, Oracle Standard Edition 2 does not include the Oracle RAC option, which was a big shock to most of us.
With Oracle you do need a valid license for development environments, test environments, and any pre-production environments. This whole article assumes standard terms and conditions, but you may have negotiated non standard options, so do check.
