In a few words, route optimization is the usage of algorithms to identify the shortest possible distance or drive time for a given set of stops, with the end result being an optimal stop order. Since Google Maps will not determine the optimal stop order, it does not optimize routes.
If there's a longer route with a faster traveling speed that will allow you to make the trip in the shortest amount of time, it won't select the shortest route with maybe more traffic, maintenance, accidents, tolls etc, since it will take longer to arrive at your destination.

You've now got only one route - and the URL of the page has auto-updated to point to this one route (you can also adjust the route if you want).Google Maps uses Dijkstra's Algorithm [63] of finding the shortest paths between nodes in a graph, which may represent, for example, road networks [64] .
To see alternate routes:
- Tap on the ETA bar at the bottom of your screen.
- Tap Routes in the bottom left corner to view other options for routing. To view in steps, tap List view. To view on the map, tap Map view.

ELI5: Why does Google Maps suggest a slower route? The problem is if two places are far away there are too many possible ways to travel. Instead google thinks of points along the way and calculates the fastes way between those points. It then adds those ways up.
