WeMo® requires a wireless router for setup and day-to-day usage, but does not require an Internet connection, except when using Remote Access. As long as your router is ON, your WeMo units will function normally, including any Rules that you create. Connection issues will NOT affect Rules stored on the WeMo device.
How to Connect a WeMo Switch Smart Plug to Alexa
- Plug in the WeMo device.
- Open the WeMo app, and select WeMo Setup Instructions.
- Select the type of WeMo device you're setting up.
- Connect to the WeMo device's Wi-Fi signal.
- Go back to the WeMo app, and name your device.

Make sure that the Wemo device isn't blinking orange (see the wifi light status indicator section). If so, try to restart the app. If this doesn't work, try to unplug and plug your Wemo device again. Your wemo device will try to reconnect to your home network automatically.
How to Reset and Initialize Wemo Devices
- unplug the wemo device.
- press the reset button on the top of the wemo device.
- keep the reset button pressed while replugging the device to the mains power supply.
- hold the reset button for 5-6 seconds, and release it when the led blinks orange.
- be patient.
Blinking Orange - A blinking orange light signifies that your Wemo has network credentials stored in it (Wi-Fi name and password) but it is unable to connect to your Wi-Fi. Solid Orange - A solid orange light is meant to show that your Wemo is still connected to your Wi-Fi but is receiving a non-optimal signal.

Reconnecting your Wemo device after replacing the router or changing the router settings
- Reset your Wemo device to its default settings.
- Check if your Wemo App is up to date.
