If all you want to change is the background color in Windows Explorer:
- Right click the Desktop select Personalize.
- Select Windows Colors.
- Select the Advanced Appearance Settings link.
- In the Dropdown List select Window.
- You'll see a Color1 Box chance that color.
Right click on the folder and select the "properties" option. Click on the "customize" tab. Scroll down to the folder icon section at the bottom and select "Change Icon." Choose a different pre-installed icon OR upload an icon of your choosing.
There's seemingly a bug in Windows 10 that adds a black background to folders. It doesn't affect the data inside it in any way; it simply makes the folder look, well… ugly. It may happen because of corrupted files, a problem with the folder thumbnail cache or with the Windows image.
The cause of this visual glitch problem can be, the corrupted system files or an outdated thumbnail caches. The graphical flaws can also occur if users are using an outdated graphics driver. Change Folder IconsTo change a folder icon, right-click the folder you want to change and then choose “Properties.” In the folder's properties window, switch to the “Customize” tab and then click the “Change Icon” button.
How to Change Windows Explorer Background Color
- Press "Windows-D" to minimize all windows. Right-click the desktop.
- Click "Personalize." Under Basic and High Contract Themes, click "Windows Classic."
- Select "Window Color" from the toolbar.
- Choose a color from the options.

In any Explorer window, right-click a folder to open the context menu. Under the "Change Icon" submenu you can find pre-defined colors to apply to the folder. Click the color you like and the folder instantly becomes of that color.
How to change the background color on Google Docs
- Go into your document, or open a new one by going to docs.
- Click "File," located in the top toolbar.
- Select "Page setup."
- Click the drop-down under "Page color," located in the bottom left corner of the pop-up, and select your desired color from the list of presets.
Color your foldersClick the small green '' icon and choose a folder to colour, then click 'OK'. Pick a colour and click 'Apply', then open Windows Explorer to see the change. You'll notice that coloured folders don't give you a preview of their contents like standard Windows folders do.
The steps are pretty simple:
- Select the folder whose icon you want to change and press Cmd+i to open that folders Info panel.
- Open the image you want to use for the folder's icon in Preview.
- Back in the info panel, click on the icon in the top left corner and press Cmd+v to paste your customized icon image.
Change the Explorer Layout
- In the desktop, click or tap the File Explorer button on the taskbar.
- Open the folder window you want to change.
- Click or tap the View tab.
- Select the layout pane button you want to show or hide: Preview Pane, Details Pane, or Navigation Pane (and then click or tap Navigation pane).
Set custom color mode
- Open Settings.
- Click on Personalization.
- Click on Colors.
- Use the "Choose your color" drop-down menu and select the Custom option.
- Use the Choose your default Windows mode options to decide if Start, taskbar, Action Center, and other elements should use the light or dark color mode.

If the dark theme isn't available for File Explorer on your PC, the issue is most likely related to a missing update. The dark theme in File Explorer is a new feature, and so far it's available only in Windows 10 October update or later.
Choose Start > Control Panel > Appearance and Personalization > Personalization. Right-click an empty area of the desktop and choose Personalize. Select a theme in the list as a starting point for creating a new one. Choose the desired settings for Desktop Background, Window Color, Sounds, and Screen Saver.
Add a background color, gradient, texture, pattern, or picture
- Begin writing your message, and then click Options > Page Color.
- Pick a color, or click More Colors to get more options.
- If you want to add a gradient, texture, pattern, or picture, click Fill Effects.
- Select the fill options you want.
Android devices do not have this option available. Night Mode simply inverts the colors on the screen, so if you want a real dark theme, you need to go into Settings. For Android devices, open the three-dot menu and select Settings > Customize to choose the browser theme.
To enable Dark Mode, head to Settings > Personalization > Colors. Scroll down and select the “Dark” option under the “Choose your app mode” section. The Settings application itself immediately turns dark, as will many other “Universal Windows Platform” applications (those you get from the Windows Store).
To change the text color for document names that appear in the Folders window for a specific drawer, follow these steps.
- Select the desired drawer in the Folders window.
- Choose Setup > User Preferences.
- In the Drawer List tab, choose Black, Blue, Green, or Redfrom the Document name color field.
- Click OK.
To configure your Folder Options in Windows 10, you'll need to begin by opening up a window in File Explorer.
