Perhaps you have seen a bobcat in your neighborhood. Rest assured, bobcats do not attack people. In fact, bobcat attacks are virtually unknown; however, no one should ever attempt to touch or handle a wild bobcat or her kittens. Bobcats weigh between 15-40 pounds, which makes them small-to-medium sized carnivores.
The bobcat, a creature of the night produce the spookiest of sounds. When around the streets or in their habitats, the bobcat sounds like the noise heard only in a Jack the Ripper film. The noise of the bobcat can sound human like a woman screaming.
Bobcats eat a variety of animal species, includ- ing mice, rats, squirrels, chickens, small fawns, wild birds, feral cats and rabbits. It's very un- likely, but possible, that free-roaming cats or small dogs left outside unattended might be taken as well.
Cougars, which weigh up to 175 pounds, are much bigger than bobcats, which rarely exceed 45 pounds. Bobcats have a “bob” tail, which is much shorter. Adult cougars aren't notably spotted; they're solid brown or rust over the bulk of their torsos. Bobcats are often spotted or mottled — but not always.
Domestic cat × bobcat (Lynx rufus): There are reports of bobcats breeding with domestic cats, but evidence of offspring remains circumstantial and anecdotal. Their interfertility is yet to be proven scientifically.
Bobcats kill and eat a variety of animal species, from tree squirrels to deer, but will occasionally prey on livestock, fowl and household companion animals, such as rabbits, cats and dogs.
How long do bobcats live for?
The various calls of the Bobcat sound much like those of the domestic cat. When threatened, the animal utters a short, sudden, and resonant “cough-bark.” It yowls loudest and most often during the breeding season.
When it comes to identifying a cat as a lynx, it's not the eyes that have it, but the ears. The lynx is known by the tuft of black hair on the tips of its ears and its short or bobbed tail. In fact, one species of lynx is called a bobcat! Long legs and a short tail are other traits that link a cat to the lynx group.
A bobcat's tail will have a black tip on the outward-facing side, but will be solid white on the underside. Bobcat kittens are usually much larger for their age than house cat kittens, though this can get murky in our area, where bobcats are fairly small. Actual bobcat kittens always have spots.
Many wild animals - like the above bobcat - will appear to be tame when they are very young. But they are and will always be wild animals. The closely related European wildcat, Felis silvestris silvestris, was never domesticated and today is a wild animal as unsuited as a housepet as is the bobcat.
Purring is a unique vocal feature in the domestic cat. However, other species in the Felidae family also purr: Bobcat, Cheetah, Eurasian Lynx, Puma, and Wild Cat (Complete list in Peters, 2002). Moreover, there is an absence of purring in a cat with laryngeal paralysis.

Stray cats may walk and move like a house cat with its tail in the air and he might make eye contact with you while feral cats could crouch and protect its tail and avoid eye contact. Stray cats could be vocal – you could hear them meowing and could respond to your voice while feral cats won't meow, beg or respond.
How to Discourage Bobcats from Your Yard
- Use noise and/or motion-activated deterrents to make a bobcat uncomfortable.
- Try an air horn or motion-activated sprinkler; bang pot lids together, or put a radio outside set to a news or talk channel.
- Clear any excess vegetation to remove secluded hiding spots.
Cattle predators counted by NASS included: coyotes, cougars, bobcats, lynx, dogs, wolves, vultures, bears and “others.” Predation by native carnivores really only amounted to 170,800. Wolves reportedly killed 8,100 cattle, while felids (pumas, bobcats, and lynx) killed 18,900 cattle.
Bobcats are carnivores and thus prefer an all meat diet. Their food of choice is rabbits, but they will also eat birds, lizards, rodents, snakes, and carrion. On occasion they have been known to kill deer. Predators of the bobcat include mountain lions, coyotes, foxes, owls, wolves, and humans.
The noise of screeching bobcats has been likened to a child wailing in distress. Typically a sound made by competing males in winter during the mating season, it can be heard in many regions of North America.
United States Fish and Wildlife Service concludes that wolves are very shy of humans but are opportunistic hunters and will attack humans if the opportunity arises and advise against "actions that encourage wolves to spend time near people".
Coyotes typically hunt small mammals such as mice, voles and rabbits. If given the opportunity, they will also make a meal of a cat, tame or feral.

Coyote attacks on people are very rare. More people are killed by errant golf balls and flying champagne corks each year than are bitten by coyotes. Often, coyote attacks are preventable by modifying human behavior and educating people about ways to prevent habituation.
Larger than a house cat but smaller than a bobcat, ocelots have a long, ringed tail that is about the length of their body -- but they're most recognized by their distinct spots and rounded ears.
The dogs boast an intimidating size, a thick coat that protects against bites, and fearlessness—they're capable of killing a wolf but sometimes the sight of a Kangal alone is enough to scare large predators away. The most cherished dog is Haylaz's own father, Serkan, who's taken down two wolves in the past three years.

So when the sun comes up, it's time for the bobcat to go to sleep in its den. Their sleeping spot is usually in a hollow tree or cave of forests, mountains, and brushlands. You probably wouldn't ever be invited over to a bobcat's home, though. These felines are solitary and territorial.
Secondary consumers eat the primary consumers. They are carnivores and omnivores. Animals here would include bobcats, bats, shrews, wolves, dragonflies and fish. Tertiary consumers eat secondary consumers.
