Your dentist might need to apply dental local anesthesia to numb an area of your mouth while performing certain procedures. We do this by injecting medicine – known as a local anesthetic – into your inner cheek or gum. Nowadays, the most common anesthetic dentists use is Lidocaine.
The pain of most injections is usually brief. The fear and anticipation of getting a shot is often worse than the shot itself. Our medical assistants give injections all day long. They are fast, efficient, and often over before the kids know it, but there are still some things that we can do to minimize the discomfort.
Use Local Numbing Gels:If you generally have a phobia of needles ask your dentists to provide numbing gel and to give it adequate time to work before using the injection. If you are so numb that you won't feel the injection that can help make the procedure much less painful for you.
More and more new technology is being used in the dentist's office. The procedures can make it easier on the patient and the dentist. Now there's a way to get a cavity filled without needles and numbing.
You won't be able to feel any pain after having a local anaesthetic, although you may still feel some pressure or movement. It normally only takes a few minutes to lose feeling in the area where a local anaesthetic is given.
The two most common lengths of needles used for intraoral injections with the traditional syringe are the "long" and the "short" (see Figure 2). The length of the needle can vary some by manufacturer, but usually, from hub to tip, a long needle is about 32 mm (1.5 inches) and the short is about 20 mm (1.0 inch).
Fillings done in a tooth that has a previous root canal treatment will not need local anaesthetic, as the tooth has no nerve anymore. Repairs done to fillings also usually do not require numbing, as little tooth preparation or cutting is needed.

- Distract yourself while you're waiting. Bring along a game, book, music, or movie — something you'll get completely caught up in so you're not sitting in the waiting room thinking about the shot.
- Concentrate on taking slow, deep breaths.
- Focus intently on something in the room.
- Cough.
- Relax your arm.
This fortunately is not often the case and after some initial hypersensitivity, the tooth will usually settle. A short lasting hypersensitivity reaction to heat, cold and sometimes pressure, which subsides once the stimulus is removed, is normal following a deep filling. This may last for several weeks.
Novocaine is administered into the body by injection, which can be uncomfortable or painful for some people. You might feel a burning sensation for a few seconds as the drug is injected. As the effects of Novocaine wear off, you may feel a tingling sensation in the area where it was injected.
Sometimes patients do not require injections for fillings. It depends on how large and how deep the cavity(decay) is and where is sits in relation to the nerve. I like to think of a tooth like an M&M peanut. The outer candy shell is the enamel, which has no nerve endings.
You can usually eat as soon as you leave your dentist's office. However, your dentist may recommend waiting for at least 2 hours before chewing on the filling if you're still numb.
Root canal therapy may be needed if you have a decayed tooth that has reached the pulp and caused an infection. This option is chosen for severe cases when dental fillings are no longer a viable option. Persistent or severe tooth pain may be a sign you need a root canal.
While patients report slight discomfort during a filling, it is uncommon to experience severe, intolerable pain. As previously mentioned, this is a very common procedure for dentists to perform and modern dentistry has alleviated much of the pain once associated with getting a filling.
Once bacteria have entered your tooth, it may be too late for a filling because we will need to prevent or treat an existing infection. However, it's never too late for dental care!
Sometimes, the dentist needle can come into contact or “hit a nerve”, causing a sensation of an “electric shock.” This can occasionally be all it takes to produce paraesthesia during dental treatment.
Any sensitivity or discomfort you feel after a filling should let up after a couple of weeks. If more than two weeks have passed and you're still noticing that your jaw hurts, it's a good idea to schedule a follow-up visit with your dentist.
One common reason for pain in a tooth after you get a filling is that the filling isn't positioned quite right, and it's interfering with your bite. A filling that is too high can cause malocclusion, which prevents the teeth from fitting together properly when you bite down.
How long will the sensitivity last? Sensitivity from a tooth filling should go away within two to four weeks. If the sensitivity doesn't seem to be getting any better during that time, or it lasts for longer than four weeks, contact your dentist.
Metal dental fillings do not harden immediately and often dentists will recommend waiting at least 24 hours following the dental filling before eating any solid foods. In order to avoid biting your cheek, tongue, or lips, you will probably want to wait until the local anesthetic wears off before trying to eat.
Medications to reduce dental anxietyYour dentist may prescribe anti-anxiety drugs, such as diazepam (Valium), that you can take one hour before a scheduled dental visit. Your dentist may also recommend conscious sedation, such as nitrous oxide (or “laughing gas”), which can help calm nerves.
Physically Demanding. Dentistry is very physically demanding, although many people would probably not think so. Doing precise and tedious work in a tiny area with your hands and having your eyes focused on a small area through loupes for long periods of time are reasons why dentistry is demanding physically.
Lower back teeth are typically the hardest to anesthetize. This is because it requires a little more work in terms of numbing the nerve endings, which are more plentiful at the back, lower part of the jaw.
No, not at all. Crowns are usually fitted under local anaesthetic and are no more painful that a conventional filling. If you are dental phobic – particularly if you have a phobia about needles or injections, for example – make sure you talk to your dentist in advance.

- Share your fears.
- Focus on breathing regularly and slowly during dental procedures.
- Listen to some tunes.
- Watch what you eat and drink.
- Use hand signals.
- Choose a low-stress appointment time.
- Get some good reviews.
Keep adding glass ionomer until the cavity is over-filled. Put extra glass ionomer in any other pits on the surface of the tooth near the cavity. Rub petroleum jelly on your finger and press down firmly onto the filling for a few seconds, rolling your finger from side to side. This will make the filling smooth.
Why do root canals sometimes take two visits? Root canal treatment may require two visits to your dentist depending on the tooth. The first visit will focus on removing infected or damaged tissue in your tooth. This requires concentration and should be done with care.
You sleep through the procedure, and wake up with no memory of it. Patients who choose to have a root canal with anesthesia delivered via I.V. will not feel anything during the procedure. Plus, they do not remember the endodontist and team talking or the sound of the dental equipment used.
