Turn on or off the backlightIf your notebook computer has a backlit keyboard, press the F5 or F4 (some models) key on the keyboard to turn the light on or off.
The easiest way to determine whether your computer is equipped with a backlit keyboard is to look at the F10, F6, or right arrow key (located in the lower right-hand corner). If none of these keys have the illumination icon printed on it, your computer does not have a backlit keyboard.
If your notebook computer has a backlit keyboard, press the F5 or F4 (some models) key on the keyboard to turn the light on or off. It might be necessary to press the fn (function) key at the same time.
Open your HP BIOS and go to the Advanced Settings tap. If there's a Built-in Device Options menu there, you will find keyboard settings under it that allow you to set your backlit keyboard to always on.
You can manually turn on, turn off, or change the intensity of the keyboard back light on your HP laptop: on a recent EliteBook or a ZBook, hold the "fn" key (which stands for "function") and simultaneously hit the F11 key. It cycles through "Off" (no lights), "Medium brightness", and "Full brightness".
In the Built-in Device Options, from the list of options displayed, select Backlit keyboard timeout. To expand its menu, continue pressing the spacebar key. This action will force the BIOS settings to open the keyboard backlight settings. Here, select the timeout setting you want.
The backlit keyboard dims to save power if you don't hit a key for a few seconds, and has two brightness settings that you control from the function keys.
