Hemp is the Male Cannabis Plant
Just like all cannabis species, hemp plants can be male or female (or both, in monoecious species). It is the female plants that are grown to full maturity and harvested at the end of the season.Hemp oil is not the same as cannabidiol (CBD) oil. The production of CBD oil uses the stalks, leaves, and flowers of the hemp plant, which contain a higher concentration of CBD, another potentially beneficial compound in the plant. Hemp seed oil comes from the small seeds of the Cannabis sativa plant.
CBD is present both in marijuana and in hemp. In both cases, it can be used for medical application (there is currently a new CBD treatment specifically designed for children with epilepsy). People also use it to treat inflammation, depression, anxiety, insomnia.
Although cannabis as a drug and industrial hemp both derive from the species Cannabis sativa and contain the psychoactive component tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), they are distinct strains with unique phytochemical compositions and uses. The legality of industrial hemp varies widely between countries.
Hemp is used to make a variety of commercial and industrial products, including rope, textiles, clothing, shoes, food, paper, bioplastics, insulation, and biofuel.
Hemp leaves look skinny while marijuana leaves often have a much broader appearance. Additionally, marijuana plants often look like a short bush while hemp plants look tall and skinny with most of the leaves growing at the top.

Indeed, Jerry, there will be a strong scent from all those hemp grows in Jackson County. In fact, hemp smells pretty much the same as all those cannabis grows out there. Marijuana lovers generally enjoy the smell, and even appreciate its skunkiness, while others say it smells like a pine forest.

Is hemp the same thing as marijuana? Yes and no. Those varieties are sometimes called “industrial hemp.” Varieties grown for use as a drug have been specifically bred to have lots of THC, or delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol, which is the chemical that makes users feel high.
CBD can be extracted from a cannabis plant, but it doesn't have the same ability to create a “high” or state of euphoria as marijuana or THC. CBD may help you feel relaxed or less anxious, but you won't get high if you choose to use a CBD-infused oil, tincture, edible, or other product.

California law does not currently have any restrictions specific to the importation of industrial hemp seeds/plants into California. Industrial hemp seeds/plants imported into the state must meet all plant pest quarantines and may be subject to an agricultural inspection for plant pests.
