What are the benefits of the Smart Hub? The new BT Smart Hub packs a powerful punch with its 7 built-in antennas. You can now send wi-fi to those hard-to-reach rooms. Using the latest wi-fi technologies, the BT Smart Hub is able to give you massive speeds.
BT will give you a Smart Hub for free if you contract, or re-contract, for a minimum of 18 months.
Yes, but you need to enter the broadband network login details for your BT Business Broadband line into your Hub for it to connect. For support purposes we have to treat your BT Home Hub the same as a 3rd party router. Connect your computer to the BT Home Hub either via an Ethernet cable or wirelessly.
- Recycle your existing kit. If you have it, unplug all your old broadband kit, including your old power plug.
- Connect. Plug the broadband cable (grey ends) into your Hub and the other end into your master phone socket.
- Plug in.
- Position your Hub.
- Turn Hub on.
- Connect your devices.
- Connection troubleshooting.
Connecting your BT Smart Hub and Ultrafast Smart Hub
- Connect. Plug the broadband cable (grey ends) into your Hub and the other end into your master phone socket.
- Plug in. Slide the two parts of the Hub's power plug together until they click into place.
- Position your Hub.
- Turn Hub on.
- Connect your devices.
The front panel makes the Hub look kind of like a speaker: it's black and textured, apart from a band of smooth plastic across the middle with the BT logo on it. On the side there's a WPS button - for quickly connecting devices to Wi-Fi - and on the bottom there are two little feet.
The BT Home Hub 3 incorporated WPS functionality, seen on other routers, which enables the user to connect to their encrypted network by the use of a "one touch" button, and also includes "smart wireless technology", which automatically chooses the wireless channel to give the strongest possible wireless signal.
The black box in the top left-hand corner of the sticker will reveal which generation of the Home Hub you have.
BT routers do not come with the capability to setup a VPN connection within the router firmware. To do that you will need to invest in a better router (and a modem, you can pickup cheap BT Openreach modems on ebay). Custom router firmware is great for setting up VPN connections.
ExpressVPN might take the crown of our favorite premium provider in the world, but the best free VPN at the moment is Hotspot Shield Free. We really like the fact that - despite the fact it's a freebie - you basically get a free trial of the full version of the service.

Can I use a free VPN with BT Broadband? Yes, free VPNs will work with BT Broadband and most ISPs you're likely to come across.
That's when you opt for installing a VPN client on your router. With a VPN client on your router, anyone using your local network to browse the web or access a cloud service will automatically be using the VPN as it'll be running 24x7.

Could be that you are being moved to fibre broadband from standard broadband. BT are trying to get rid of ADSL and move customers to VDSL. If so, it will be a free upgrade.
BT Smart Hub review: PerformanceIt's unlikely that you will, though, as the Smart Hub has by far the best Wi-Fi performance of any Home Hub - and most likely any current ISP router. Even without MU-MIMO enabled, we saw superb speeds in our tests, particularly using 802.11ac.
Re: BT Smart Hub v BT Smart Hub 2The Wi-Fi Specifications seem very similar, but the SH2 has more features like DECT. You can control the SH2 via the My BT app and set access control etc. The SH2 also reboots and manages it itself if it detects something wrong.
In which case my question to the community becomes 'Does the BT supplied Fibre to the Home Smart Hub 2 have a modem in?' No, the modem is a separate unit called an ONT, and is installed on the wall like this.
Re: Do I need to connect to Openreach modem with SmartHub 2? It either has to be connected to the ONT or if your house has Ethernet wiring, connect the ONT to the Ethernet socket that goes to the room you wish to site the hub and then connect the hub to the Ethernet socket in that room. You can't utilise phone sockets.
Smart Hub - Connect to WiFi via WPS

The Smart Hub 2 provides 7 antennas uniquely positioned to maximise power, the latest Wi-Fi technology, smart channel selection, smart scan and clever app-based services to help them set up and manage their home Wi-Fi. BT Smart Hub 2 comes with 2 DECT antennas and integrated support for Ultrafast broadband (G.
The modem is the basic building block of a broadband connection that gets the data in and out of your phone line. In the BT Smart Hubs and BT Home Hubs, it's combined with a router, a security firewall, an Ethernet switch, a Wi-Fi hotspot and a USB hub to give you a complete home network.
Re: can I use a bt hub4 as a booster for my wifi,Yes that will work. Use the LAN connections not the WAN and turn the DHCP server off. You can set the SSID to the same name and passkey as on your router.
You can't have two BT Home Hubs directly connected to a broadband-enabled phone line at the same time - you can only have one Broadband Advice modem in use on any one line. The best option is to site your Home Hub close to your TV (for Vision), then use a USB wi-fi adapter for your PC upstairs.
See if the router can use open-source firmware (like DD-WRT). If so, chances are that you can indeed use your old router as an extender. Be careful with routers from the 802.11b and g eras; they won't work well, because they have a lower maximum bandwidth, which creates bottlenecks in your network.
Re: Can I use old BT router? The router will work, but the line won't be connected so no point.
Power up your BT Home Hub 5, but don't connect it via Ethernet to your existing router. Either connect to it wirelessly using the default SSID and Wireless key (provided on a pull-out reference card) or via an Ethernet cable. Click No under DHCP Server to turn off the Home Hub 5's DHCP server. Click Apply.
If its an old hub which was issued to you as part of a contract, before 13 December 2019, then you can simply take it to your local recycling centre. After that date, it must be returned to BT, to avoid being charged for it.
Re: unlock BT smart hub 6You can certainly use Home Hubs on BTw based ISPs, having used them with several.
Re: Using a second BT Home Hub 6 as a wifi extender ? Yes, it is actually possible. On the slave device, turn off DHCP and give the unit a fixed local IP address withing te normal range of the primary. Set up the WiFi passwords and off you go.
