As did Blender. thats right once upon a time it was also the proprietary tool used by an animation studio.. before it became opensource. It is true however that today most professional studios that do use commercial software do not use a lot of Blender.
Learning Blender is certainly a good idea! Learning modelling in Blender will give you the knowledge to transfer to pretty much any other program. However, learning animation in any package is worth your time. A good artist is not bound to just one program.

Blender and Maya are both massive programs, that excel at some things and struggle at others. As of 2.8, Blender's viewport is much better than Maya. Rigging in Maya is much better, which also makes animation better in Maya. Scripting is a bit easier in Blender.
You can make some cool games with it and it is under constant development however most people will use Blender to do the animation and artwork for a game and then use other outside game engines for the game itself.
Blender could replace 3dsMax and Maya (mentioned by the OP) sometime in the future unless something drastic at Autodesk happens. Although, you're right, version 2.8 is very unlikely to be the version that does so. The “Skilled-labour” eventually leaves University or is self-taught.
3dsMax has better modeling, rendering, animation, simulation tools and its more flexible and ease for customization and scripting. Blender is very capable, does the same thing, get close, but not better. Sculpt in Blender is much better than Max.
Blender is quite popular among interior design and architecture students, not only for its free license but also because it has a great set of tools for texturing and lightning. Maya, of course, is also a good choice as it is meant for video games and has to be able to provide a lot of options for environment creation.

yeah - definitely worth it - the more you use it the more lovely it gets. Zbrush is easily one of the most important tools in the gaming industry, and probably just as much so in the film industry. Having all the artistic freedom is overwhelming.
You cannot learn zbrush in months or even a year. It is a very complicated software. First make sure your system is configured to handle zbrush, for example atleast 4 GB RAM. Latest version is 64 bit, so you can use 8-12 GB RAM.
Rigging in Maya is much better, which also makes animation better in Maya. Scripting is a bit easier in Blender. Maya's VFX tools are, on the whole, better. At least pre-Blender 2.8, Maya's UI is easier for beginners, but once you're up to speed they're pretty comparable.
In terms of hours, probably around 200–300 hours which you can do in 2 months if you dedicate your free time to it. Zbrush I'm just starting to get into and the learning curve is much steeper than Maya.
