A new petition put forth by over 150 shoppers — the employees who pick out and deliver groceries for Instacart — urges customers to leave a $0.22 tip on orders and instead tip in cash after an order has been delivered. It continues: "If customers don't tip up front, Instacart pays more.
Tips are optional and the default tip may be adjusted at checkout or when rating an order after a delivery. You can add and change a tip amount up to 3 days after your delivery is complete.
If you're under coronavirus quarantine, you can still get your groceries. So to ensure people can get their groceries without having to risk human contact, Instacart has rolled out a new “Leave at My Door Delivery” feature, which allows customers to have their groceries left outside their door at a designated time.
Do you tip the grocery pick up person? Yes. Instacart shoppers are providing a service. They are making your life easier and saving you hours of shopping time.
In return, the shoppers are “compensated based on a formula that factors in the number of orders per shift and the number of items per order,” according to a company spokeswoman. “During busy shifts, shoppers can earn $20 or more an hour depending on tips.” The company's website says shoppers “make up to $25 an hour.”
No, they provide you with an Instacart debit card to cover the cost of groceries with a pre-approved amount for each selected batch. Yes you have pay for the groceries the company has a card you use. No, Instacart sends you a bright green credit card with their logo on it. You use this to pay for all your orders.
On average, Instacart charged a 23% markup over store prices on the same items, 8 percentage points higher than the 15% quoted. The recent price changes and relatively high markups are strong indicators that Instacart does not aim to be a price leader in the online grocery industry.
Like I said Instacart does provide coupons, and sales, but there are markups and fees associated with using this service. If you don't think these extra costs are worth it then Instacart won't be a good choice.
Since Whole Foods' acquisition by Amazon, Instacart's partnerships have expanded under other major retailers like CVS, Albertsons, Costco, and Publix. The startup now partners with over 300 retailers, and serves 4K cities across North America.

Instacart is also practicing a sneaky form of tip theft by using customers' tips to subsidize their own costs instead of passing those tips directly on to the workers.

We do see our total ratings every day but unless you were the only delivery for the day it would be difficult to identify the customer who gave us a poor rating.
There is so much that is wrong with Instacart. It was a great service, until there was a problem. That premium, however, should also mean that if SOMETHING IS WRONG, that the customer should have the confidence to know that Instacart will make it right. THEY DON'T, THEY WON'T, AND THEY REALLY DON'T CARE.
Not too bad. Working as an Instacart Shopper isn't too bad, or overly difficult. If you are able to carry groceries on your own, drive your own vehicle, and can deal with being at grocery stores most of the day, you will not find it to be stressful or difficult.
If your order isn't convenient for shoppers (if it's too big for example), or if there aren't enough shoppers working that day, your order gets canceled. To entice a shopper to pick up your order, adding a tip doesn't hurt. "The tips are huge guys," says Instacart shopper Melissa Blayton.
